Churchill Brothers SC 3-1 Mohammedan Sporting: Defending champions pick up their second win

The Goan club registered only their second victory of the season by handing Mohammedan a drubbing...

Churchill Brothers SC won 3-1 against Mohammedan Sporting on Sunday afternoon in a round 15 I-League encounter at the Duler Stadium. Lenny Rodrigues (51') and Jaison Vales (71') put the hosts 2-0 up before a penalty from Balwant Singh added a third. Ashim Biswas scored a consolation goal for the visitors in the 86th minute.

Mariano Dias dropped goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya in favour of Lalit Thapa while Alesh Sawant and Ravanan Dharmaraj replaced Anthony Pereira and Micky Fernandes from the team that lost 0-1 to Shillong Lajong.

Mohammedan Sporting started with all six of their on-loan players from IMG-Reliance, namely Mehrajuddin Wadoo, Syed Rahim Nabi, Ishfaq Ahmed, Luis Barreto, Nirmal Chettri and Manish Maithani. Tolgay Ozbey and Ajay Singh did not travel to Goa due to injury while Josimar da Silva Martins and Luciano Sobrosa were serving their one-match ban.

In the first chance of the game, Balwant Singh ran down the left flank and cut the ball back for Bineesh Balan, but the latter took too long to line-up a shot as Samson Ramengmawia cleared the danger in the 14th minute.

A few minutes later, Ashim Biswas directed Penn Orji's cross right into the hands of Churchill goalkeeper.

Mohammedan goalkeeper Luis Barreto blocked a shot by Balwant that was taken from inside the box after the latter was set up by Balan on the half-hour mark. Alesh Sawant then saw two of his efforts averted by the Mohammedan defense as the score at half-time read 0-0.

Churchill's second half substitute Jaison Vales, set-up Lenny Rodrigues on the right and the India international blasted a right-footed shot past Luis Barreto from outside the box just six minutes after the restart.

In the 71st minute, Abdelhamid Shabana released Balwant and the latter found Jaison inside the box who made no mistake in finding the back of the net and doubling the home side's advantage.

With Churchill already 2-0 up, they were awarded a penalty immediately after the restart as as Rakesh Masih brought down Shabana inside the box and was sent off as a result. Birthday boy Balwant Singh slammed the spot-kick straight down the middle to give his side a 3-0 lead.

There was some fight left in the ten-man Mohammedan side though and they pulled a goal back with four minutes of normal time to play. Ashim Biswas tapped in a cross by substitute Israil Gurung to end the game at 3-1.

The victory was much needed for the Red Machines as they are still rooted at the foot of the table with 10 points from 13 matches while the result sees Mohammedan remain dangerously close to the bottom two sides with 13 points from as many matches.
