Churchill Brothers SC 1-3 Bengaluru FC: Chhetri's brace keeps Westwood's troops on top

A goal from Sean Rooney and two from Sunil Chhetri were enough to earn three points for Bengaluru away to the defending champions and maintain their place at the summit.

Churchill Brothers were beaten 1-3 by Bengaluru FC at the Duler Stadium in an I-League encounter on Friday afternoon. Sean Rooney's opener in the 50th minute was followed by a Sunil Chhetri strike in the 64th. Balwant Singh did manage to pull one back for the hosts in the 74th minute but Chhetri bagged his second three minutes later.

The one change for the home team saw Micky Fernandes return from suspension to replace Balwant Singh. Meanwhile, Sean Rooney and Lalrozama Fanai were handed starts ahead of Robin Singh and Keegan Pereira.

Both teams' midfields took a while to find their feet and the first real chance fell to Bengaluru FC when Rooney's free-kick crashed off the post in the 14th minute.

The closest chance for Churchill came in the 20th minute. On receiving a pass from Saran Singh, a lovely turn by Yasser Shahen saw him get away from Curtis Osano but the Syrian striker shot wide with only Pawan Kumar to beat in goal.

The first half otherwise lacked goal scoring opportunities apart from incidents that saw Fanai forcing a deflection off a shot on target by Saran and Lenny Rodrigues hitting the side netting before the break.

The away side broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart. Sunil Chhetri's cross from the left was met by Rooney who rose highest to direct his header into the left corner and give Bengaluru the lead.

In the 64th minute, it was Chhetri's turn to get his name on the score sheet. Thoi Singh's cross from the right fell perfectly for the skipper to tap in and double his side's advantage.

In the 74th minute, Balwant Singh halved the deficit by making space for himself and sending his right-footed attempt past the Bengaluru keeper after being played in by Shabana.

However, the come-back was short-lived as Chhetri scored his second three minutes later to restore his side's two-goal cushion. Darren Caldeira received the ball from Fanai and played it into the Indian skipper who edged closer to the target before driving his shot past the keeper.

Robin Singh could have added to the home side's woes but he shot wide from inside the box in the 80th minute before missing the target again nine minutes later with only the keeper to beat.

Bengaluru's second away win of the season maintained their place at the top of the table while Churchill Brothers remain rooted to the bottom.
