The Australian became the Champions League's oldest debutant at 41 years of age, and had little to do throughout. Coped comfortably with anything Steaua could muster.
The captain was caught out in the opening stages as he failed to track Iancu's run, but was fortunate to see the forward spurn his chance. Made a few good interceptions as the game wore on.
The 26-year-old was more composed at the back, but Mourinho will still be concerned with how easily Stanciu split the Brazilian and Terry with a fine pass. Showed more determination after the break with a few crunching challenges, but doesn't look entirely safe at centre-back.
The left-back has been out of favour recently, but showed good composure and also tested Tatarusanu with a 30-yard effort.
Looked dangerous at set pieces and went close with a backheel and a glancing header, while being typically uncompromising at the back.
Started positively and his corners were a constant menace, with an early delivery leading to Ba's opener. His dribbling made the Steaua back line, and a fine cross should have been converted by Ba for the second. Replaced by De Bruyne.
The Belgian was quieter than usual, especially given Steaua's anaemic display. He improved in the second half, but lacked a cutting edge, while he wasted an open goal by heading over.
The England midfielder was sharp and got into good shooting positions, only to uncharacteristically spurn tempting opportunities from range.
The Brazilian starlet was a bright spark from the off, causing problems and flicking on Willian's header to set up the opener.
J. Obi Mikel
The defensive midfielder was caught badly in possession almost leading to an immediate equaliser for the visitors. Booked after sloppy play early on and looking devoid of confidence, it was an off day for the Nigerian. Replaced by Ramires in the second half.
Showed good awareness to nab the opener at the back post, and offered a physical threat to pull Steaua's defenders out of position. Wasted an easy chance to double his tally on 50 minutes, and was harshly denied by an offside flag at the death.
The goalkeeper could do noting about the opener, but showed strong hands to deny Ivanovic a second. Did well to block a few second-half attempts and claim Chelsea's many corners.
The full-back should have tracked Ba better to prevent the opening goal, and wasted a great chance to set up a team-mate with a near-post cross, while earning a yellow later on. Improved with a fine last-ditch challenge, but not a great display.
The Steaua captain showed bravery to head away from under his own bar to deny Ba an early opener, and was at times the only thing standing between his side and an early drubbing.
Struggled to get into the game in the middle as Chelsea dominated proceedings.
The centre-back was at times flummoxed by the movement of Chelsea's attackers, with his captain Szukala bailing him out on occasion.
The left-back showed a good turn of pace to push forward on the break, but a final ball was lacking. Booked late on for grabbing Willian's hair.
The right winger flickered in and out of the game, and was well marshalled by a resurgent Cole.
Showed wonderful vision to weight a perfect ball through to Iancu who wasted an easy chance, but was quieter as the game wore on.
The defensive midfielder showed energy but was unable to quell Chelsea's attacking midfielders in the centre of the park. Wasted a decent shooting opportunity with a shank in the second half, and was replaced by Leandro.
Missed a gilt-edged chance to equalise early on as he could only drag an effort wide of Schwarzer's left-hand post, and was replaced early in the second half.
The striker was isolated leading the line as Chelsea dominated the first half, with little service to speak of. Replaced by Piovaccari.
