Maintained his concentration to make an excellent block from Ballack when the match was goal-less and commanded his penalty area excellently.
Solid in defence, apart from a difficult moments when Schurrle moved to the left in the second half, but did not get forward as much as would have been expected.
One horrible challenge on Kiessling apart, this was a fine display by the flamboyant Brazilian. Made some excellent forays forward in the second half and got his reward by creating and then finishing with utter conviction the opening goal. Subbed after 75 minutes after receiving a knock.
Unfussy and tidy in defence and effective bombing up the left flank in a fine display by the left-back. 7
Demonstrated his excellent spring by gobbling up all the aerial balls by Leverkusen, although was not quite as convincing on the deck.
J. Obi Mikel
Chelsea's holding midfielder helped to keep the back door shut and close down the space for Leverkusen's attackers but his passing lacked ambition.
In the first half, his main contribution came when play stopped and in dead ball situations, but was far more influential after the break and nipped in to score the second goal.
Seemed uncomfortable in his central midfield role, particularly in defensive situations. Looked more threatening when he ran at the defence on the left flank.
The odd nice touch apart, he struggled to have much of an impact and was replaced by Lampard after an hour.
Better, but still a long way from the Torres of old. Took up some good positions but was unconvincing whenever he ran at Leverkusen's defence and never looked like opening his account for the season. Deserves credit for laying off the ball for Luiz's opening goal and unselfishly setting up the second for Mata.
His starting position wide on the right negated many of his natural strengths but he was one of Chelsea's liveliest attackers and twice nearly manufactured a goal in the first half with long-range left footed rockets and then had a shot scrambled against the bar in the second period. Replaced by Anelka after an hour.
Commanding display on a busy night for the goalkeeper. Pulled off smart saves from Sturridge and Torres and dealt superbly with all Chelsea's set pieces. Could do little about either goal.
Handled Torres with aplomb until his team stepped up their search for an equaliser and had to cede some space.
Excellent going forward although not quite as sure in defensive situations.
Excellent display by the wide player, particularly in the second half when his pace, trickery and vision caused real problems for Chelsea's defence.
Energetic display but showed little quality non the ball and was replaced after 72 minutes as Leverkusen searched for an equaliser.
His touch and vision were influential in Leverkusen's purple patch at the start of the second half but faded as the game wore on and subbed with 10 minutes left.
His most valuable contribution of the night was making sure he didn't drop the commemorative plaque given to him before kick-off by Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck. On the pitch, the veteran's contribution was negligible, apart from an outstanding second half one-on-one, which he wasted by toe poking straight at Cech. Withdrawn after an hour.
Mikel's opposite number displayed a sure touch in the anchorman role and his crisp passing helped to ease the pressure on his team.
Struggled in the second half when he tired and Chelsea had more space.
With a name like that, he should be a left-winger but demonstrated great resilience and anticipation at centre-half.
The giant centre-forward's height and touch caused real problems after the break, but he did not get enough support from his team-mates.
- 40 Hilário
Replaced the injured Luiz and made some telling interceptions late on.
- 19 Paulo Ferreira
Chelsea scored the opener seconds after his arrival as a sub, but he was not involved in the goal and his main role was to shore up the midfield.
- 20 J. McEachran
- 21 S. Kalou
Made little impact.
