The Dortmund goalkeeper had a quiet outing as he barely had a save to make. The blame for the Mainz goal lays more with his defence than with him.
Slightly more subdued than Piszczek on the opposite flank, but still afforded his side decent support on the left, most notably with a great cross to an unmarked Lewandowski. However, Choupo Moting was able to skip past him with too much ease in a dangerous first half move.
Functioned effectively as an extra winger and provided some delightful deliveries from out wide. Was one of the guilty parties in the concession of the Mainz leveler but made up for it soon after, teeing up Kagawa for the go-ahead goal.
Other than a missed attempt at a clearance in the first half, he dealt with danger with the minimum of fuss. Had a great interception late on that quelled a dangerous Mainz move, and hit a few lovely balls out of defence as well.
Like the rest of his defensive colleagues he found things quiet at the back for the most part while winning almost everything in the air. However, Zidan fooled him too easily for the Mainz goal.
Was a constant menace throughout, with his quick passing and even quicker feet always keeping the Mainz defence on the back foot. His did seem to lack his shooting touch today, but came up with the all important goal moments after the Mainz equaliser to round off an impressive game.
Played well as the only really defensive minded midfielder, and was always quick to cover and hep out his defence whenever Mainz looked like threatening.
A far more encouraging performance from the youngster than many of his previous displays in a Dortmund shirt, as he stood out for his ability to supply his teammates with an impressive range of passing.
Missed a great chance in the game's early moments but was always a willing runner on the flanks, even though his end product did not always come up to scratch.
Gave a performance full of commitment and purpose, as the visitors had real difficulty matching his engine out wide. His goal, a well struck effort into the corner, was a just reward for a great game.
Always kept the defence honest with some great movement into space, but his shooting boots were clearly left at home, with a succession of efforts blazed off target.
Was an embattled man in the first half, as he never looked comfortable with the constant pressure on his goal. However, he bucked up after the break to make a few crucial saves that kept the score down.
At times, he could not quite figure out work out with Noveski: who would attack the ball and who would cover. As a result, there often was plenty of space for the hosts to attack.
Simply outdone in defence as his shoddy defensive play effectively surrendered his flank to the hosts. Taken off with an hour to go.
Suffered from a lack of communication with his defensive partner Bungert, but did impress with his tight marking on one or two occasions.
Missed one of the rare chances for Mainz, firing over the bar from a good position. Looked a threat during a brief spell just before the equaliser, but for the most part, his influence was limited.
Looked uncomfortable with the task of tracking Grosskreutz out wide, or even with the occasional attack down his channel from Kagawa. Also drifted too far inward when the ball was on the opposite flank, leaving his direct opponent in too much space.
Little joy for the youngster out wide, as he appeared isolated whenever he had the ball and could do nothing significant in possession.
Largely invisible in the middle, as Kagawa and the rest of the Dortmund attack. ran rings around him for the entirety of the contest.
Left chasing shadows all game long as he simply could not handle the flow of the Dortmund midfield. Hauled off after an hour looking like a beaten man.
At times looked to be the most likely source of anything good in the offensive third for Mainz, but the lack of support from his teammates meant that his endeavor was always likely to be in vain. Taken off with 10 minutes to go.
Has been the savior of Mainz since his return in the winter transfer window, and appeared to strike gold once again, scoring a well taken equaliser against his former club that he pointedly refused to celebrate.
- 33 H. Müller
- 11 Y. Malli
Did not get into the game in his half hour on the field.
- 17 Z. Stieber
Failed to make a note in his limited run out
Made a definitive impact of the bench, setting up Zidan for the equalising goal that appeared to give his team an unlikely point. However, it was not to be.
