The Dortmund keeper had a reasonably quiet first half and was only tested once before Van Persie fired past him at the end of the half. He showed good anticipation to block a Gervinho effort after the interval, and was otherwise not tested as Dortmund piled the pressure on.
The central defender continually showed excellent vision to deal with the runs and pace of the Arsenal forwards and he dominated Van Persie in the air. He looked calm and controlled on the ball and linked well with his midfield as Dortmund looked to build up attacks.
The tall centre half coped well with lone striker Van Persie but was unable to do anything about the opening goal as the Dutch striker drifted between Hummels and himself. He had a fantastic opportunity to get his side back into the game with 10 minutes to go but his poked effort was saved by Szczesny following a left wing corner.
The full back kept Gervinho very quiet with tight marking and good pace, he also caused problems going forward but many of his crosses were cleared by the impressive Mertesacker or claimed by Szczesny.
He had a busy evening dealing with the pace of Walcott who was very lively and at times he struggled to keep up with the England man. Going forward he looked composed, except for when attempting a long range drive which sailed miles over Szczesny’s crossbar.
The Japanese forward was a constant threat to the Arsenal defence with his clever runs and neat link up play, particularly with Goetze but they were unable to unlock a resolute Gunners back four.
The midfielder had two great chances to give his side the lead in the first half but he was unable to open the scoring. After that he struggled to make an impact on the game and he was replaced by Perisic in the second half.
The holding midfielder’s costly mistake led to Arsenal's opening goal, after his sloppy pass was intercepted. The Dortmund captain looked to atone for his error but he struggled to get a foot on the ball and he was replaced by Blaszczykowski in the second half.
The midfielder had a quiet game compared to his fellow teammates but he linked up play very neatly. He was always available for a pass and showed good vision to find a team mate and ensure his side kept possession.
The young promising German midfielder made excellent runs throughout the match and gave Gibbs plenty to worry about. He gave the hosts hope every time he got on the ball and created a good chance for Piszczek in the opening forays of the second half.
The Pole had a good game on his own upfront, but chances were few and far between for him. When he did get a sight of goal he was unlucky to see a shot cleared off the line by Sagna in the opening quarter of the game after he had rounded Szczesny. He had a wonderful chance to win the game for the hosts in injury time but was denied by Szczesny.
The Polish keeper had to be alert as the German side dominated the first half but resolute defending meant he rarely had a shot to save and just crosses to collect. He was rescued by Sagna early on after seeing Lewandowski go round him but after that he was comfortable. Could do nothing about Perisic's dramatic late equaliser.
The Frenchman looked solid at full back and kept whichever attacking midfielder drifted to the left hand side. He showed excellent awareness to rescue his side when he made a crucial goal line clearance after Lewandowski had rounded Szczesny midway through the first half.
Had a tough evening against the lively Goetze but the youngster handled him well, only being beaten on a couple of occasions. He tried to get forward when he could but had to be wary of leaving too much space for the Dortmund midfield to take advantage of.
Seemed to struggle alongside Mertesacker which is maybe to be expected given they are a new central defensive pairing, but in such an important game they were lucky not to be punished.
The German had problems dealing with the lively forward players as Lewandowski and Kagawa created plenty of room for their fellow forwards. However as the game continued he showed his quality by winning headers, making tackles and ensuring his side kept some possession.
Playing in his first champions league start for eight years the former Everton man was not really involved in the first half as Dortmund controlled the midfield. He was moved in to a more attacking role in the latter parts of the second half, but continued to provide defensive support as the Gunners hung onto the slight lead.
Playing as the only defence minded midfielder in the Arsenal starting line-up meant Song was busy trying to stop the Dortmund players as they piled the pressure on in the early parts of the game. He had a quiet first half but was everywhere for the Gunners in the second half as he broke up every Dortmund attack.
Making first start for Arsenal since arrival on loan from Chelsea Benayoun had a tough start to the game as the lively Dortmund midfield dominated the early possession but he slowly began to find his feet and created a great chance for Van Persie that the Dutchman was unable to convert.
R. van Persie
Had a quiet first half but sprang into life with moments to go when he received a pass from Walcott and fired past Weidenfeller. The Dutchman spent the second half making good runs but had very little to work with and as a result he was fairly quiet. He was replaced by Chamakh in the closing minutes.
Had a lively start to the game and tried to use his pace to worry the Dortmund defence but his lack of end product meant he was unable to really get his side ahead in the game, however he played a neat ball into Van Persie in the closing minutes of the half which the Dutchman was able to fire into the back of the net. He continued to cause problems to the defence but was replaced by Frimpong in the second half.
The Ivorian struggled to make an impact on the game, his runs were handled well by the German defence and they managed to nullify the threat he can cause. In the second half he had a great chance to double Arsenal's lead, he showed excellent determination to ride a Subotic tackle but his shot was blocked by Weidenfeller's legs. Was replaced by Andre Santos in the final few minutes of the match.

He replaced Kehl in the second half and showed excellent pace to try and stretch the game and get his side back into the match.
Perisic replaced Grosskreutz in the second half and gave Dortmund something different going forward and he produced a moment of sheer quality to get his side back into the game, volleying the ball into the top corner of Szczesny's net from the edge of the area to send the home crowd delirious.
