The I-League outfit pulled off a relatively comfortable win against Bhawanipore with goals from Josimar and Rakesh Masih sealing the tie.Mohammedan Sporting beat Bhawanipore FC 2-0 in a 2014 Federation Cup encounter at the MDS Complex in Manjeri on Friday evening. Second half goals from Josimar (75') and Rakesh Masih (90+2) were enough to seal victory for the Kolkatan club.
Both managers made only one change each. Surabuddin Mollick came in for Rajiv Ghosh for Bhawanipore while Israil Gurung was replaced by Ashim Biswas.
Mohammedan kept possession well in the opening period and denied the Bhawanipore players any space in midfield. In the 13th minute though, Nabin Hela directed his header wide from Jayashelan Prasad's cross.
In the 16th minute, Nirmal Chhetri played a neat diagonal pass into the path of Syed Rahim Nabi who was unable to keep it his shot down as it sailed over the crossbar. Two minutes later, Luciano Sabrosa headed wide from Manish Maithani's corner which was Mohammedan's third in the opening twenty minutes.
The I-League team began to pile on the pressure and in the 36th minute, Josimar could only head straight at the goalkeeper from another corner. In the very next minute, Dhanrajan burst forward before finding Penn Orji whose effort was thwarted by Debjit Majumder in goal.
Mohammedan then earned a penalty in the 39th minute when Josimar was brought down by Sourav Chakraborty inside the area. However, Penn Orji initial effort from the spot was disallowed as Josimar advanced into the box early and his secomd attempt crashed off the crossbar, leaving the game goalless at half-time.
The second period was starved of any chances of note until the 66th minute when Maithani's effort from range forced a diving save from Majumder. A minute later, Ashim did well to turn his marker and get his shot away but it failed to find the target.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute as Mohammedan took the lead. Another corner from Maithani led to Josimar finishing from inside the six-yard box to put his side 1-0 up. In the 82nd minute, Penn nearly made up for his earlier miss from the spot but in a one-on-one situation with the keeper, he sent his shot agonizingly wide after Nabi's pass had put him clean through.
Mohammedan had to wait until the second minute of injury time to double their lead and seal the victory. Second half substitute Rakesh Masih unleash a fierce shot from range for which the Bhawanipore custodian had no answer.
The result sees Mohammedan take maximum points from their opening two fixtures in the competition while Bhawanipore have lost both of theirs.
