Full-time in Lisbon and Benfica will take a 3-1 lead to the second leg at St. James' Park next Thursday. The visitors opened the scoring through Cisse early on, but the hosts eventually took over and were well worth their win. Bring on the second leg!
90' + 3'
Newcastle are pushing plenty of players forward as they win a few free kicks just inside the Benfica half, but twice they commit fouls around the Benfica area, thus giving the hosts possession once again.
The hosts play a nice series of passes out on the left, but the result of the move is a Lima shot from 30 yards which goes miles wide.
Replays show that the winger went down very easily there, with Ameobi doing little wrong. The forward received a yellow card, too.
Yellow Card Shola Ameobi
Gaitan tries to trick his way past Shola Ameobi, but the forward bundles him to the floor, and he appears to catch the winger in the face with his hand.
The match has certainly calmed a bit since Benfica's third, but Santon still wants to eradicate his earlier mistake as he tries his luck from just outside the area, but Artur watches it past his post.
Corner for the hosts as John knocks the ball off Simpson on its way behind. In the process Simpson appears to have picked up an injury.
Gaitan knocks the ball into the area from a fairly central position and Newcastle fail to clear it, allowing the Argentine the opportunity to follow his cross up and get a shot away, but Krul stops his tame effort.
Bizarre decision from one of the referee's assistants as he flags Cisse offside despite being nowhere near the active players or the ball. Alan Pardew and his team are clearly angry.
Newcastle are doing their best to find a way back into this as they attack again, but Marveaux's good work down the right results in nothing as his final ball to Cisse is very poor and Benfica take the ball away.
Yellow Card Enzo Nicolás Pérez
Penalty Goal Ó. Cardozo
GOAL!!! Cardozo steps up again and places the spot kick past a helpless Krul. This match is getting away from Newcastle now.
Penalty Goal Ó. Cardozo
Cardozo takes the penalty and scores!!! But... The Paraguayan will have to take it again as players entered the area!
Penalty to Benfica! The hosts play a corner into the area and after Sissoko ducks out of the way of the ball, it strikes Steven Taylor on the arm. Good decision by the officials.
GOAL!! Benfica take the lead against Newcastle! Santon has possession in the left-back area and the young Italian panics under pressure. He opts to knock the ball back to Krul, but his pass is intercepted by Lima who rounds the goalkeeper and slides the ball home from a narrow angle.
I don't even need to tell you what happened there, as I'm sure you will have guessed that nothing came of that corner.
Benfica take the free kick quickly and move forward down the left. Gaitan ends up tumbling to the floor under the pressure of Sissoko, but he only gets a corner.
Vurnon Anita has his first involvement since coming on as he fouls fellow substitute Enzo Perez.
Enzo Nicolás Pérez
We have a stoppage in play now as James Perch looks set to be forced off with an injury. Meanwhile Benfica are also readying some changes.
Standing over the corner is Gaitan, but Newcastle deal with it fairly easily.
Gaitan attacks down the left again and crosses, but Marveaux deflects his delivery behind for a corner.
Benfica get forward again as John plays the ball forward for Rodrigo. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa appears to have it under control, but he falls over allowing the Spaniard to break into the area and square for Cardozo to knock into an open goal. However, the forward fails to get a shot away on the stretch and Newcastle get lucky.
The home fans are not happy with the referee as Matic swings for a shot on the edge of the area, but then falls to the floor seemingly due to a tackle from Yohan Cabaye. Replays show there was minimal contact.
Possession is very end-to-end at the moment, with neither side really dominated the ball during these early stages of the second half. Benfica will surely look to impose themselves as the half goes on.
Benfica are certainly living dangerously, as Newcastle continue to look threatening on the break. Nevertheless, they are back on the attack themselves. An intricate passing move on the edge of the Newcastle area appears to break down due to Cardozo's poor touch, but he accidentally tees Gomes up. However, the youngster's shot goes well over.
Cisse breaks the offside trap and gets on the end of a through ball from Marveaux before clipping a shot over Artur and towards the open goal, but his effort comes back off the post.
Benfica get the second half underway in Lisbon.
45' + 1'
Half-time in Lisbon, and Newcastle take a commendable 1-1 scoreline into the break, although the hosts will likely be questioning how they have not managed to take the lead.
What. A. Mess. Both Melgarejo and Garay stand over the ball, but both run up to it and leave the kick to the other play. Eventually Garay squares the ball, but Gomes' pass seconds later goes straight out of play.
Benfica pressing to take the lead before the break, with the tricky Gaitan coming inside as often as possible, and this time he wins a free kick from Marveaux. This is a good opportunity for the hosts, but they will have to improve on their previous efforts.
Krul to the rescue again! Gaitan plays a short corner and then crosses after getting the ball back immediately, but the Dutch goalkeeper punches away the resulting Nemanja Matic header.
The lively Rodrigo goes for goal again, this time from range, but his effort flies comfortably over Krul's goal.
Great save from Krul! Benfica work the ball out to the left where Gaitan beats Simpson and crosses to Rodrigo, whose volley is kept out by the goalkeeper's right hand as he dives down towards the post.
The hosts are taking their time with build-up at the moment, knocking the ball around at the back before quickly pinging it forward to the front men.
True to form for this match, Benfica's corner is completely wasted as Newcastle take possession away from their area.
Corner for Benfica as John's cross from the right is headed behind by Simpson.
It has been a frenetic 10 minutes in Lisbon, and the over-riding fact is that the two defences are losing their respective battles.
Yellow Card Rodrigo
So nearly a second for Benfica! Cardozo is involved once again on the edge of the box, but this time he sets up Gaitan. The winger curls a shot towards the bottom far corner and Krul palms it to Rodrigo, but again makes the save. The move ends with Gaitan slipping over as he shoots at the far post.
GOAL!! Benfica equalise! Good work around the Newcastle area results in Cardozo shooting powerfully for the top corner, only for Krul to make the save. However, Rodrigo reacts quickly and pokes the ball past the goalkeeper to level the score.
What a chance for Newcastle! Sissoko clips the ball to the left for Jonas, who in turn cuts a low cross back towards the penalty spot towards Cisse. The forward's shot deflects on to the post, but Artur pounces on the ball.
Yellow Card James Perch
Benfica take the free kick, but after what appeared to be a complicated and previously planned kick, John gifts possession back to Newcastle who almost spring a counterattack.
Free kick to Benfica in a decent area for a cross. Gaitan bursts away from Simpson and Perch, drawing a foul from the midfielder who gets booked.
Very good move from the hosts as Almeida, Cardozo and John combined down the right. Almeida centres the ball and after giving Simpson a bit of a nudge, Gaitan gets a header away, but his effort is so poor as it loops over the goal.
That goal has shocked Benfica into life as they are straight back on the front foot. Cardozo tries to scoop the ball over the Newcastle defence, and although Marveaux makes a hash of his clearance, they do get it away eventually.
Assist Moussa Sissoko
Goal Papiss Cissé
GOAL! Newcastle take the lead in Lisbon! Danny Simpson plays a great ball between the Benfica left-back and centre-half for Moussa Sissoko to get on the end of. The midfielder smashes the ball across the goal and Cisse is there to tap it in. They have their away goal!
Benfica look dangerous in attack, but Newcastle are perfectly set-up to catch them on the counterattack.
After a good start from Newcastle, Benfica are on top at the moment as they knock the ball around confidently. Gomes plays the ball inside for Nico Gaitan and the winger tries his luck from some way out. Tim Krul makes a mess of it, but he does manage to pounce on it again before Oscar Cardozo.
Good play by Melgarejo as he jinks away from Simpson before poking a pass through for Andre Gomes. The youngster takes a touch and shoots from range, but it goes well wide of the post.
