Atlético Madrid win Aggregate 2 - 1
A solitary strike from Koke early on has sealed a 2-1 aggregate victory for Diego Simeone's men over domestic rivals, Barcelona, at Vicente Calderon! The tie was delicately balanced after the first leg finished 1-1 , and Los Colchoneros have defended their one-goal advantage on the second leg magnificently to see them progress to the final-four! A sensational story for the Spanish capital club! They're on the mach to do the double! I'm Martin Macdonald, thanks for joining us, see you next time!
FULL TIME! ATLETICO MADRID ARE THROUGH TO THE SEMI FINAL!!!!!!
90' + 3'
Yellow Card Daniel Alves
90' + 2'
Yellow Card Javier Mascherano
90' + 1'
Yellow Card Koke
90' + 1'
Three minutes of stoppage time remaining here, and Atletico are going to pull out every trick in the book to eat up the seconds!
RODRIGUEEEEZZZZ! Atletico almost wrap it up! The substitute latches on to a fantastic over the top defence pass from Raul Garcia and lashes a volley at goal, but Pinto once again beats the ball behind!
There's a massive chorus of groans throughout the stadium as Filipe needlessly puts the ball behind for a corner kick whilst under no pressure. These last few minutes will seem like an eternity to the Atletico fans!
The Vicente Calderon crowd can sense something special here, and as you can imagine, Simeone is lapping it up in the technical area. They can't get in party mode yet though, as Barcelona typically never give up to the final whistle!
Seven minutes remaining of normal time here. Can Barcelona keep their dream alive, or will Atletico Madrid make the semi final of the Champions League for the first time since 1974?!
Xavi fires the ball into the feet of Alexis and the Chilean cleverly turns the ball into the path of Messi, but Miranda and Godin remain solid to see the ball safely back through to Courtois.
Simeone is looking to add some stability here and introduces a midfielder, Cristian Rodriguez, in place of a striker, David Villa. Barca have four strikers on the park and the hosts now have none!
NEYYYYMAAAARRRR!! HOW CLOSE WAS THAT?!! The Brazilian gets in front of Miranda inside the box and glances a terrific header towards the bottom corner. Courtois looks stranded, but he's let off the hook as the ball goes inches, INCHES, wide! So close to an equaliser for the visitors!
The game is just going to get so stretched in the remaining 15 minutes here. Barcelona need to score to keep their Champions League dream alive, but as a result they are going to leave themselves wide open at the back. Can the hosts exploit the space?
Barca make their second change of the match as Pedro is introduced in place of Andres Iniesta. They've got four out-and-out attackers on the pitch now; they need to go for it!
Andrés Iniesta Luján
MASSIVE PENALTY SHOUT FOR ATLETICO! David Villa collects the ball inside the box and is smashed right in the back by Mascherano, but the referee plays on, and Simeone is incensed on the touchline! He can't believe it!
How many chances are Atletico going to have to seal this tie?! Gabi is the latest culprit to waste an opportunity as he goes through on goal and has all the time in the world to pick his spot, but sends a horribly tame shot at goal which Pinto saves!
Predictably, it's Messi who steps up, but unpredictably, the Argentine's free kick is struck very poorly and goes harmlessly into the Atletico wall. The former Ballon d'Or winner has been slightly out-of-sorts tonight, but you can never rule him out in making the difference.
Barca have a great opportunity to test Courtois here as Los Cules are awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Neymar, Messi, and Xavi all stand over the ball. Who will take charge?
Diegooooo!! He almost makes an immediate impact! The Brazilian gets beyond the Barca defence down the right channel and lashes a strike towards the back post, but Pinto does well to turn the attempt behind for a corner!
The Argentine boss of the home side is acting as head cheerleader on the sidelines, like he has done all season in an attempt to catalyse the performance of his players. You can't fault his passion that's for sure!
Diego Simeone follows suit and introduces the hero of the first leg, Diego, in place of Adrian Lopez, who has ran himself ragged up top for Atletico.
Tata Martino makes his first change of the match as Fabregas comes off to be replaced by Alexis Sanchez, who looked bright after coming on in the first leg.
Atletico burst out of midfield through Koke and Adrian down the right-hand side. The latter does brilliantly whilst in a tight position to find the onrushing Filipe, but the Brazilian's pass down the line to Villa is easily intercepted by Alves.
Much like the opening few minutes of the match, Barca are looking comfortable on the ball in the final third, and the Vicente Calderon crowd are meeting every pass with jeers and boos. Such a hostile atmosphere for the opposition whenever they visit here!
It's been better from Barcelona in the opening 10 minutes of the second half here. Already they have managed to get in behind the defence a couple of times, but Neymar and Messi squandered the best opportunity of the match a few moments ago.
What a challenge from Filipe! Neymar goes on a typically weaving dribble inside after coming in from the left and looks poised to pull the trigger, but his compatriot comes in with a superb block to win the ball back for Atletico!
Messi comes deep and picks out Jordi Alba with a wonderful pass in behind the Atletico defence, but the home side are let off the hook as the ball just comes off the hand of the former Valencia full back!
Fantastic goalkeeping from Courtois! Messi threads a lovely pass through the middle for Neymar and all the Brazilian has to done is slot home. He attempts to take the ball around the oncoming Belgian, who remains big to claw it away! Messi latches on to the rebound but for some reason doesn't take the opportunity on his right foot and reverts the play back!
At least one aspect of the first half has lasted into the second period, and it's that Pinto is taking FAR too much time on the ball! He's almost dispossessed by Villa again!
We are back under way in Madrid!
Half time in Vicente Calderon. Atletico Madrid are halfway there to pulling off a fantastic victory over their domestic rivals in the Champions League quarter final thanks to an early goal from Koke. It is 1-0 to the hosts at the break, and could have been more as they struck the bar an astonishing three times in the first half through Adrian and twice from David Villa. Never discount Barca though, they only need a goal to level this tie!
Just one minute of added time here in Madrid. Tata Martino will be looking to get into the changing room to rally his troops. As things stand they are going OUT of the Champions League!
And just a few moments later it is Barcelona who have a penalty appeal! Fabregas cleverly cuts back inside to the box and goes to ground after a tackle from the defender. Again, no spotkick is given, and again, looks like the correct call!
The referee has a decision to make here! Adrian gets in behind the Barcelona defence and goes down under the challenge of Mascherano inside the box, looking for a penalty. Howard Webb waves play on, and it looks like a good decision! He went down too easily!
David Villa finds himself surrounded between three Barca players but battles valiantly to shield the ball and earn a throw in deep inside the opposition half. He'd love to score against his former club tonight, especially after being booed at the Camp Nou last week.
The ball comes all the way back to Pinto and he's probably lucky that he has time to take four or five touches before finally releasing. He just looks likely to make a mistake in every game. He's did okay so far, but the threat is always there.
Barca move the ball around excellently on the edge of the Atletico box and it eventually comes to Alba who cushions into the path of Iniesta with a wonderful touch, but the World Cup winner takes a suprisingly POOR touch, which allows Gabi to make the challenge.
Neymar does well to track back and win the ball back off Raul Garcia, but is then upended by the Atletico man who comes in with a rather unsavoury tackle. The Barcelona players a demanding a yellow card from referee Howard Webb, but the Englishman is having none of it. Probably was a booking actually!
Martino's men finally look have found their wits about them slightly and look much more confident on the ball. It's working at the moment as they pop the ball around in the final third, but Courtois hasn't been truly tested yet.
Atletico just look so incredibly difficult to break down at the moment, as they sit with two banks of four in front of the box. Their counterattack just has so much pace too, so it all makes for a wonderfully balanced team.
Iniesta latches on to a mistake at the back and goes on a marauding run through the middle but the eventual shot lacks some conviction and ends up trickling through to the grateful Courtois.
It's been questioned all throughout the season whether Atletico can sustain their intense pressing throughout the 90 minutes, and they successfully did it last week, so it looks as if Barca will need to dig extremely deep to get back level here.
Miss by Messi after some wonderful work from Neymar! The Brazilian stretches his legs down the left-hand side and shows some delightful skill to wriggle out of two challenges before crossing to the front post. Messi meets the ball a little too early though, and whips his strike wide!
Barcelona's back four are lacking any kind of communication and organisation here. Barely even next to each other, and some further forward than others; it's been a shambles so far.
THE WOODWORK STRUCK AGAIN! David Villa gets in behind the Barcelona defence and latches on to a ball over the top before digging out a superb volley towards the corner, but his attempt doesn't dip in time and crashes off the crossbar! This is absolutely unbelievable!
Yellow Card Busquets
First booking of the match goes to Busquets and it's a deserved one for the Barca man as he goes in extremely late on Adrian Lopez just outside the centre circle.
Barca are just starting to find their passing game again in the middle of the park which is important as, if nothing else, it takes the pressure off their shaky defence. Let's see if they can pose a problem or two for Courtois.
Barca need to sort themselves out defensively, and very quickly here. Any time that Simeone's men venture into the final third they look dangerous and likely to create a goalscoring chance.
Have we all caught our breath yet? What an electrifying opening to this semi-final second leg!
MESSI!! How close was that?! The Argentine gets beyond his marker at the front post and glances a header towards goal, but his attempt goes inches wide of the mark! Incredibly close to an equaliser!
ATLETICO HIT THE POST AGAIN!!! Barcelona's goal continues to lead a charmed life as David Villa receives the ball to feet on the left just inside the box and smashes a strike off the woodwork!
Barcelona had a decent couple of minutes in which they camped Atletico inside their own half, but since then it has been a role-reversal with the Catalan side side sitting deep absorbing pressure!
Ohhhh, Jose Pinto, what are you doing?! The Barca keeper receives the ball to feet at the back and takes an ill-advised couple of touches in an attempt to round Villa! He gets away with it, but Tata Martino's heart must have been in his mouth there!
Atletico are probing for more goals here, and Barcelona look completely unable to handle them!
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLL FOR ATLETICO MADRID!! AN UNBELIEVABLE START FROM THE HOSTS! Adrian initially hits the post with a cracking shot but the ball comes back into the box for the the 26-year-old who nods to the back post for Koke, who smashes the strike home! One-nil!
Messiiii. Unlucky! The Argentine tests his shooting boots for the first time in the match as he fizzes a strike at goal from range, but his attempt goes a few yards over the bar.
Barca get the opportunity to get a decent delivery into the box from the left-hand side and it's Xavi who's tasked with he set-piece. The Los Cules captain whips a cross into the area but Tiago rises high to head the ball away.
Barcelona typically start the match with possession in the middle of the park, and they are being met with a chorus of vicious boos from the partizan home crowd.
We are under way in the Spanish capital!
The Champions League theme never gets old, and it has definitely proved to be a source of inspiration this season for Atletico, who remain unbeaten in the competition!
Five minutes to kick-off folks, and the atmosphere is certainly building in the Vicente Calderon!
Barcelona bench: Oier, Montoya, Song, Adriano, Alexis, Pedro, Sergi Roberto.
Atletico bench: Aranzubia, Alderweireld, Insua, Mario Suarez, Cristian Rodriguez, Sosa, Diego.
Barca will obviously looking to Lionel Messi for goals tonight. The Argentine has struck 20 goals in 19 games against Atletico, including three hat-tricks. Not bad at all!
Los Cules have recorded four wins and five losses from nine two-legged ties against Spanish rivals in UEFA competition.
Tata Martino goes for more or less the same side that started the last match, with the exception of Gerard Pique, who misses the second leg after picking up a hip injury in a challenge with Diego Costa a week ago. Marc Bartra comes into the centre of defence as his replacement.
Another of their influential stars, Arda Turan, also fails to start the match as he struggles with a groin problem.
A massive blow for Atletico, then, as Diego Costa has failed to shake off the hamstring injury suffered in the first leg. Adrian Lopez comes into the first XI to partner David Villa in attack.
Barcelona (4-3-3): Pinto; Alves, Mascherano, Bartra, Jordi Alba; Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta; Cesc, Neymar, Messi.
Atletico (4-4-2): Courtois; Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Filipe Luis; Tiago, Gabi, Koke, Raul Garcia; Adrian, Villa.
Interestingly, the last two-legged tie between the sides came in this season's Spanish Super Cup in August, when league champions Barcelona beat Copa del Rey winners Atletico on away goals after following up a 1-1 draw in Madrid. Simeone's men earned the opposite away victory last week, so will we have the same outcome?
The Madrid-based side have hosted Barcelona 106 times before in all competitions with a record of 50 home wins, 33 Barcelona victories and 23 draws.
Tata Martino's outfit are aiming to make it to their seventh successive semi-final in Europe's premier club competition, whereas Atletico hope to reach the last four for the first time since 1974. Will experience at this stage of the competition play a part?
Los Colchoneros are searching for their fifth straight Champions League win at home, but they come up against a Barcelona side tonight who have not lost at the Vicente Calderon in four years.
Diego Simeone's men enter the encounter tonight with a slight advantage having recorded an away goal in last week's match. The first leg clash at Camp Nou ended in a 1-1 draw, with a Diego screamer and a cool finish from Neymar ensuring the draw and the delicately poised nature of the tie heading into the second leg.
I'm Martin Macdonald, and it is my pleasure to take you through the action!
