An in-form Pailan Arrows side will face title-contenders East Bengal in an I-League match in Kalyani today.
Pailan Arrows started the season on a promising note and even had a peek into the top three spots after 6th round. But after that, the team has lost its form and the performance graph kept on dipping as the season progressed. However, the young developmental side of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has recovered some ground in their last two matches, snatching four points out of a possible six.
The likes of Shouvik Ghosh and Alwyn George have also got a national call-up, given their impressive outings in the league. For scoring goals, the team will largely rely on Holicharan Narzary, who has scored 6 of the team’s 17 goals this season.
The responsibility of supplying balls to the forwards will be divided between George and Milan Singh who has occasionally made runs down the middle and shoots from the edge of the box. Tirthankar Sarkar, who has been in good form of late, will have his share of action as a second half substitute. Along with Shouvik and Pronay Halder, Prabir Das will try to contain the East Bengal attacks and also go on an overlap when needed.
For East Bengal, they cannot afford to drop points. They are 2 points behind the Churchill Brothers, having played a game more. They had beaten Arthur Papas’s side 3-0 in the first leg, with Sanju Pradhan scoring a brace on his return. East Bengal’s new foreigner Andrew Barisic has already donned the club colours when he appeared in a Kolkata league match against Bhawanipore midweek.
This is the last I-league match for East Bengal before India’s friendly against Palestine and Manandeep Singh will give his best to impress Wim Koevermans for a first team berth. Another talking point of this match will be the performance of Penn Orji, who has looked quite out of form this season.
Pailan Arrows: It is unlikely that Papas will make any major changes in the side given their good display in the last two matches.
East Bengal: Morgan will play his regular starting XI. Uga Okpara will return form suspension. Andrew Barisic is also likely to feature. Sanju Pradhan also returns from injury and is available for selection
