Armando Colaco’s side bounced back from a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Pune FC by registering a win in Kolkata on Saturday…
Riding on a brace by Joaquim Abranches, Dempo SC defeated Pailan Arrows 2-1 in a round 12 I-League match at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. The Dempo striker gave his side a lead inside the ten minutes which was cancelled by Milan Singh’s penalty at the end of the first half. An opportunistic strike by Abranches midway through the second half sealed the victory for the away side.
Arthur Papas made two changes to his lineup that started against Churchill Brothers as Pronay Halder and Rajinder Kumar were handed a start ahead of Tirthankar Sarkar and Dhanepal Ganeshan.
With Mahesh Gawli, Ryuji Sueoka and Rohan Ricketts being unfit to start, Armando Colaco opted for Selwyn Fernandes, Romeo Fernandes and Koko Sakibo.
The opening goal came in the 10th minute as Ravi Kumar was easily shrugged off by Joaquim Abranches as the former was to take a goal-kick to tap the ball home, in what was a comical error by the Pailan custodian.
A couple of minutes later, Koko Sakibo tested Kumar from distance but the latter did well to palm the ball over the bar.
The best chance for the home side came in the 33rd minute when Holicharan Narzary got behind the Dempo backline to send in a cross which missed the outstretched leg of Alwyn George.
The home side scored the equalizer just before the end of the first half as Milan Singh scored from the spot. It was Selywn Fernandes who was the guilty party as he handled the ball inside the box from an Alwyn George header off a Milan Singh flag-kick.
After the break, neither team could get on top of the proceedings as they couldn’t see more of the ball. Out of nowhere, Joaquim Abranches produced a moment of brilliance as he slot the ball home from the edge of the box. This was after Koko Sakibo had flicked the ball for Abranches who did well to control it and get away from his marker.
Dempo could have added to their lead in the 79th minute when Clifford Miranda’s cross from the right almost found the back of the far post with goalkeeper Ravi Kumar stranded.
Pailan Arrows failed to ask questions of a makeshift Dempo defence as the Goan side got their title campaign on track with a victory. Papas’ side definitely needs to improve their midfield as they were shorn of creativity.
