Sunday’s clash between Shillong Lajong and Air India at Pune promises to be a tough mid-table encounter with both teams struggling to add consistency to their game. These two teams are just above the relegation zone with Shillong Lajong on 9th and Air India on 10th and a win here would definitely calm some nerves.
Air India have been on a good run with two wins and a draw out of their last three and would be looking for all three points as they play at home. Their midfield has been firing on all cylinders and the interim coach Anthony Fernandes would love to see more of the same dominance in this game. A thumping 4-1 derby win against Mumbai FC can act as the perfect catalyst for Air India’s uphill climb.
The Reds on the other hand have garnered 5 points out of their last three including two goal-less draws. Desmond Bulpin’s men have lacked the sharpness in front of goal and will be looking to their Nigerian target man, Friday Gbeneme to create some magic up front. Bulpin will be hoping to see a better performance from his midfield which is has been poor and way below par in the past few games if they are to put up a fight against the confident Air India.
Both these teams are lying in the bottom half of the I-League, but one expects Air India to come up trumps when the two teams meet. Air India will be looking to build on their unbeaten run and pick up all three points meanwhile Shillong Lajong will be looking for a win to lift the spirits after two dull draws.
Overall an important game for both teams as they look to move away from the danger zone and the dreaded last three positions.
Air India: Anthony Fernandes will be looking to field the same team that got the better of Mumbai FC 4-1 last weekend. Souvik Chakrabarty is on three cards for now.
Shillong Lajong FC: Bulpin would hope that his strikers come good against the Airmen who aren't very good defensively. Wailadmi Passah has three cards to his name and one more shall see him suspended for a game.
