  A competent night at left-back for the Romanian and, although he did not offer much going forward, he was entirely resolute at the back. He limited the influence of the Kuba and Piszczek combination down the right.

  Found it difficult to exert his dominance in the air as he was never too far from Lewandowski. A poor clearance offered Gotze a second chance to cross the ball and Lewandowski punished him with a cool finish.

  Darijo Srna

  After some poor corners in the first half the Croatian finally showed his expertise from set pieces with an expertly struck free kick to put Shakhtar in the lead. He regularly pushed down the right but did not neglect his defensive duties.

  Yaroslav Rakytskyy

  The centre-back made a few poor decisions when it came to stepping out of defence and subsequently made some equally bad challenges. His long ball was key to Shakhtar's second goal but he left Hummels free to head in the equaliser.

  The Czech was given the task of screening the defence but he struggled when he had players running at him. He did not read the play well enough to break up the BVB attacks and let Gotze run free.

  He made some impressive tackles in the middle of the park but spent more of his time chasing the ball down rather than passing it to his team-mates. He was a bit reckless and on another night could have seen red.

  Drifted into some dangerous areas between the lines but failed to really show the prowess that has made him the highest scoring player in the Ukrainian top flight so far this season.

  The Brazilian had a few decent touches in the first half but was quiet in front of goal. Srna's width enabled him to drift inside where he proved dangerous and was only denied a goal by a Schmelzer clearance just before the break.

  Struggled to get involved with the action as a lone striker. His movement was not particularly impressive as he couldn't get into threatening areas to worry Weidenfeller. An ultimately disappointing display.

  Had an impressive debut for his new club as he used his tremendous pace to great effect. He made dribbling look easy as he skipped past defenders repeatedly and was Shakhtar's most dangerous player.

  Douglas Costa Top of the Match

  Replaced Taison in the 62nd minute and proved to be a real handful. His technique was exquisite, particularly as he brought down a long ball and fired home what he must have thought was the winning goal, only for Hummels to equalise late on.

  Roman Weidenfeller Flop of the Match

  Despite the pace on Srna's free kick, he could have reacted quicker and got a hand on the ball to try and keep it out. His blushes were spared by a goal-line Schmelzer clearance on the stroke of half-time after some unconvincing keeping.

  Rattled the bar with the first meaningful effort of the game in the 17th minute but was at fault for Shakhtar's second as he failed to read the flight of the ball. He was beaten on the deck too many times but somewhat atoned for his errors with a late equaliser.

  Struggled to cope with the pace of Taison in the first half as the Brazilian raced past him a number of times. He stepped up his game in the second half and added an extra attacking outlet for his side on the right.

  Struggled to assert his physical dominance in midfield and was pressed tightly by the opposition. He only ever passed the ball sideways or backwards, and was unable to link defence and attack.

  Picked up the ball in deep areas where he found a lot of space in the first half. His eagerness to unlock the defence was unwavering and he was always looking to provide Lewandowski with quality service, eventually getting an assist.

  The Pole was very lively in the opening stages but it proved not to be his night as almost every time he struck the ball at goal it drifted wide. His pace can be a dangerous tool but he failed to utilise it enough.

  A hard-working performance from the striker as he put in a physical display to keep the defenders on edge. A mishit proved brilliant just before the break as it put him in space in the area, but he stayed calm to slot home a valuable away goal.
