Defending champions Dempo SC finished fifth in the I-League 2012-13 season with a 2-1 win over Salgaocar FC at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco, Goa, on Sunday.

Armando Colaco fielded a well-known side, with the likes of Koko Sakibo and Ryuji Sueoka in attack and with Climax Lawrence leading the midfield.

The Green and Whites' interim coach Peter Valles didn't meddle much with his starting line-up either, preferring to continue with Josimar and Gabriel Obatola up front.

The Whites got the first opportunity in the eighth minute when Samir Naik sent in a cross from the right towards Koko Sakibo. Salgaocar defender Luciano Sobrosa slipped in his area but the Nigerian wasn't able to control the ball.

The opener was scored at the other end after Josimar released team-mate Gabriel Obatola on the right and the striker blasted a right-footer through the palms of Dempo goalkeeper Subasish Roychowdhury in the 15th minute.

Five minutes later, Karanjit Singh brought down Ryuji Sueoka and the Japanese medio sent the Salgaocar custodian the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Karanjit did show some brilliance minutes later, coming out of his area to deal with a Samir Naik cross that was aimed at Peter Carvalho. He also did well to block another attempt from Sakibo in the same build-up by Dempo.

Augustin Fernandes frustrated Anthony Pereira on two occasions as the Salgaocar defender put in last ditch tackles whenever the former decided to pull the trigger. However, the Dempo man was allowed to shoot in the 38th minute but his effort drifted wide of the post.

Sakibo nodded in off Anthony's free-kick in first half stoppage time, but the former was flagged off-side for the same and the two teams went into the break with a goal apiece.

It was Dempo who created the first chance in the second half too, as Sueoka put through Miranda on the left, but Karanjit was up to the task of blocking a shot on target in the 56th minute.

Rosario Mendes, who had come in place of Luciano Sobrosa at the end of the first session of play, squared a cross to Josimar from the right, but the latter shot wide from close range in the 63rd minute.

Then in the 71st minute, Dempo's Sueoka sent a free header wide after receiving a pin-point cross from Clifford Miranda from the left wing.

The second half could have been a story of misses if not for Sueoka's cross that Anthony Pereira slotted past Karanjit Singh in the 90th minute. Substitute player Marcus Mascarenhas put down a golden opportunity in injury time at the other end as Salgaocar finished seventh with 33 points.
