East Bengal 0-1 Shillong Lajong: The Reds end their campaign on a high

A goal from Taisuke Matsugane allowed the visitors to grab a shock victory in their final game of the season...

Shillong Lajong managed to end their season on a positive note, with a surprise victory over East Bengal to register their first victory away from home this season.

Japanese striker Taisuke Matsugane struck the only goal of the match to give Lajong FC full points in the Kalyani Stadium on Sunday.

The winning goal game on the 8th minute when Matsugane put the visitors ahead with an impressive finish. East Bengal who were guaranteed third spot no matter what the result, did not seem to be too bothered about the match. The home side could possibly have had an eye on their crucial tie against Myanmar's Yangon United on Wednesday in a round of the 16 match in the AFC Cup

The second half continued in the same vein as the first half, with the Bengal side finding it difficult to break past the rejuvenated Shillong side. Trevor Morgan introduced three quick fire changes by bringing on Andrew Barisic, Edeh Chidi and Penn Orji. The changes were not enough to get past the visitors defense and the game ended 1-0 in the favour of the visitors.

The result though, did not manage to affect the standings of both the teams involved as Shillong Lajong finished 11th with 28 points, while East Bengal finished 3rd with 47 points.
