Sporting Clube de Goa and ONGC, two teams who are only a point apart in the league table will fight for the bragging rights in an I-League encounter on Thursday. Sporting has 29 points from their 21 games, while the away side has 28 points after playing the same number of games.
The Flaming Oranje have hit top form lately and have won all of their last five I-League matches. They are now sixth in the league table and a win over Dempo last weekend would be a further confidence booster for them.
The defense has recently been solid, especially after the inclusion of Angel Berlanga. They have only conceded one goal in their last five outings.
The responsibility of scoring will largely rest on the shoulders of Juanfri. He will pair up with the energetic Dawson Fernandes upfront. The young Victorino Fernandes, who was impressive in the first leg of the league may get his share of action against the Oilmen. Seiya Sugishita will come on as a late substitute to add fresh impetus to the team’s attacks.
Talking of the away side, the team has transformed into one of the most formidable sides in the league after a dismal start of the season. The credit goes to Santosh Kashyap who has changed the fortunes of the side.
In the last match, ONGC held the league toppers Churchill Brothers in a 1-1 stalemate. The star of the show for them has been Yusa Katsumi. The Japanese midfielder has been widely acclaimed for his passing and down the line runs. He has got remarkable support from the likes of Jatin Bisht and Eric Brown.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has declared that the side will not be able to participate in the next edition of I-League for being unable to fulfill the club licensing criteria put forward by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). However, the team’s performance has been commendable despite the fact that they have lost the motivation of retaining their spot in the league.
Sporting: Pratesh Shirodkar and Joyner Lourenco are missing due to suspension. Rojen Singh and Rowllin Borges are expected to start instead of the duo.
ONGC: The team has struck a perfect balance and Kashyap will like to stick to it.
