East Bengal clinched the 34th Federation Cup by defeating Dempo SC 3-2 after 120 minutes of football in an exciting final played at the Kanchenjunga Stadium, Siliguri, on Sunday.

Climax Lawrence had opened the scoring in the 51st minute while Arnab Mondal found the equaliser nine minutes later before Manandeep Singh (100') and Edeh Chidi (109') drove the Kolkata side to a 3-1 lead.

Mahesh Gawli pulled one back for Armando Coalco's side in the 111th minute as the final score read 3-2 in East Bengal's favour at the end of extra time.

East Bengal were without regular center backs Uga Okpara and Gurwinder Singh due to suspensions with Arnab Mondal and Raju Gaikwad replacing the duo. Lalrindika Ralte, who scored the extra-time winner in the semi-final, once again started on the bench.

Dempo named an unchanged lineup with Clifford Miranda starting despite pulling his hamstring while Japanese medio Ryuji Sueoka made it among the substitutes.

Subhasish Roychowdhury made the first save of the match in the eighth minute as Edeh Chidi chose to shoot at goal from the left although the East Bengal striker had a few options on his right.

Four minutes later, Dempo's Koko Sakibo saw his long range effort miss the target by not much.

The closest East Bengal got to finding the back of the net was in the 22nd minute when Mehtab Hussain's flag-kick found Arnab Mondal who was allowed a free header in the box which landed at the feet of Dempo defender Debabrata Roy who cleared the ball in time.

Arnab Mondal fired another shot off target in the 40th minute before Penn Orji also saw his attempt go wide a few minutes earlier.

Just five minutes after the break, Climax Lawrence fired home a rebound off East Bengal defender Raju Gaikwad from a Debabrata Roy's throw in from the left.

A minute after Dempo keeper Roychowdhury was relieved to see Chidi's powerful right-footer go wide, Arnab Mondal nodded in the equaliser after Mehtab's corner-kick was flicked by Harmanjot Khabra at the hour mark.

Dempo had the chance of grabbing the winner in regulation time, in the 82nd minute, when Anthony Pereira found Sakibo on the far post, who headed the ball across goal-mouth, but Climax Lawrence wasn't able control the high ball close to the left post.

It took nine minutes in the first half of extra time for Manandeep Singh to fire East Bengal in the lead after Lalrindika Ralte's shot was parried away by Subhasish Roychowdhury, in a move that was initiated by substitute Sanju Pradhan from the right.

Edeh Chidi extended his side's lead in the 109th minute after effectively beating his markers on the right and curling his shot past the Dempo custodian into the far post.

Two minutes later however, a brilliant curling delivery at the far post by Godwin Franco's free-kick saw Mahesh Gawli rise and saw his timely header bring down the scoreline to 3-2.

The Goan side made a few more forays into the rival half hoping to equalise and take the game to penalties but that wasn't to be.

East Bengal got richer by Rs. 25 lakhs for winning the tournament while runners-up Dempo SC take home Rs. 15 lakhs as prize money.
