Sixteen teams participated. Only two remain now. The Final of the Federation Cup has arrived. A week of exciting football action that included upsets, goal bonanzas, and tight finishes has served as an ideal precursor to the final match to be contested between two of India's finest clubs, East Bengal and Dempo SC. While Dempo have cruised into the final after putting on consistent displays in every game, East Bengal have battled their way to this stage.
Both sides are led by experienced coaches with immense tactical nous. Armando Colaco of Dempo has been in charge for 12 years now which included a Federation Cup victory in 2004. Colaco's bold and pragmatic decision making has translated into success for the Goan club. Except for the draw against Pailan Arrows in their opening fixture, Dempo haven't had much trouble making it into the finals.
It must be pointed that the Goan side didn't score many goals at the start of the tournament but have done well by scoring at regular intervals.
|Will Colaco lead Dempo to their 2nd Federation Cup or will Morgan's side triumph?|
Trevor Morgan, on the other hand, has been with East Bengal since 2010 and has tasted success with the club by winning the Federation Cup in 2010 beating bitter rivals Mohun Bagan. East Bengal have not had an easy route to the final by any means. After drawing the opening game against Sporting Club de Goa, they achieved a narrow 2-1 win over ONGC and were given an outright scare in the last game against Kalighat which they won 4-3. This form continued into the semi-finals where a Lalrindika Ralte beauty sunk Churchill Brothers late into extra time. East Bengal, however have shown a never-say-die spirit that has served them well till the final.
East Bengal shall certainly miss the services of Uga Okpara and Gurwinder Singh at the back due to suspension and that shall hurt them in the final given that the last time the duo didn't start against Kalighat, they conceded three goals.
Another cause of concern for Morgan would be the fact that the Red and Gold haven't scored many goals from open play.
