Dempo SC beat Salgaocar FC 2-0 in the second semi-final of the 34th Federation Cup played at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri, on Friday evening.

Joaquim Abranches scored the opener in the 70th minute while Koko Sakibo sealed the victory for Armando Colaco's side in 84th minute. Salgaocar were down to 10 men after Fulganco Cardozo was sent off in the 86th minute.

Dempo started in their familiar 4-4-2 arrangement with Abranches and Sakibo as the two strikers while Anthony Pereira and Clifford Miranda ran down the right and left wings respectively.

Karim Bencherifa meanwhile sported a 4-3-3 formation with Autralian striker Sean Rooney sharing the attack with Francis Fernandes and Anthony D'Souza while skipper Luciano Sobrosa held the defense.

The match began with both sides trying hard to push forward, playing to catch their opponents out with counter-attacks.

In the 19th minute, Climax Lawrence managed to steal the ball in the midfield and had the option to pass to Sakibo on his left but instead shot straight at Salgaocar keeper Karanjit Singh.

A few more Dempo attacks were followed by a long range effort by Salgaocar's Francis Fernandes that sailed high and wide in the 28th minute.

Sean Rooney did manage to find the back of the net in the 30th minute, but the Salgaocar striker was left disappointed as he was adjudged to have handled the ball before taking the shot on goal.

Anthony Pereira's free-kick for Dempo in the 37th minute saw Miranda's header hit the post, which was the best chance of the first session of play.

In the 51st minute, a Dempo flag kick was floated in by Miranda which Abranches tried to get a touch on, but the ball hovered in front of the Salgaocar goal-mouth before Koko fouled Sobrosa.

Nicolau Colaco followed up with a counter move for Sagaocar but was unable to find a green shirt in the Dempo box before shooting another effort wide in the 61st minute.

Romeo Fernandes, who replaced Miranda in the 53rd minute, turned provider for the first goal as his free-kick was left by Koko Sakibo for Joaquim Abranches to convert a first time volley in the 70th minute.

After going down by a goal, Salgaocar tried to step up the tempo of the game, but were not able to get past the Dempo defense who were always on alert.

Just as the defending champions were looking for a way back, Koko Sakibo received a cross from Anthony Pereira and slotted the ball past Karanjit Singh after unsettling Luciano Sobrosa in the Salgaocar area with a quick turn in the 84th minute.

To make matters worse, Fulganco Cardoza picked his second yellow card of the match for a high boot on Climax Lawrence as Salgaocar were weakened to 10 men in the 86th minute.

Five minutes of injury time was not enough to change the result as Armando Colaco's side have set-up a final clash against East Bengal which will be played on 30 September at 6.30 pm IST.
