Gabriel Obertan starred on the left wing, as the Magpies tore to pieces Les Girondins' 18-game unbeaten streak with a goalscoring display at the Sports Direct Arena

Although his solid defence ensured saves were kept at a minimum, he reacted well to dangerous crosses and had no trouble collecting corners. Subbed at half-time after supposedly picking up a knock.

    Danny Simpson

Thrown straight back into the fray having missed around a month with a hamstring injury, the right-back will be delighted to have got an assist after Henrique had the misfortune of putting the ball into his own net from the defender’s cross.

  • Mike Williamson

    Mike Williamson

Error-free for a change, the Tyneside centre-back met every cross confidently with his head during the spells of Bordeaux pressure. With three of the first-choice defenders absent tonight, he organised his defensive line excellently.

    James Perch

Commanded aerially and on his feet inside the Newcastle 18-yard box throughout the first half. Maintained the showing throughout the latter 45 minutes too, to cap off a solid performance from 'Perchino'.

  • Shane Ferguson

    Shane Ferguson

The young left-back looked nervous on the ball and allowed Mariano and Salvet far too much space when they attacked his flank. However, Alan Pardew clearly gave him some inspiration at half-time as he flooded down the left frequently, including early on in the second half when he assisted Papiss Cisse.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

Showed flashes of quality such as an early firecracker which splintered just wide of the top left-hand corner. Dropped a tad deep after the first goal but his control of counterattacking long balls was - at times - masterful albeit inconsistent.

    Vurnon Anita

Failed to impress on the right arm of Newcastle’s three centre-midfielders. His passing left much to be desired while his movement was still not up to scratch. Unlikely to retain his place if he keeps this level of form up.

  • Cheikh Tiote

    Cheikh Tiote

Hard-tackling in the middle but his passes were often wayward. He needs to improve his sharpness after intermittent spells out injured clearly. Brought off in the final 20 minutes.

    Papiss Cissé

Playing on the right wing in a 4-3-3 formation, the Senegal striker looked uncomfortable with his surroundings and struggled to be impactful in the first half. However, his goal early in the second half made him look more fluent with his runs and passes.

  • Shola Ameobi

    Shola Ameobi

The iconic Toon striker was playing as skipper for the evening and capped the night early on with a tap-in. Continued to bulldoze the Les Girondins’ defence but could not get another goal despite his graft.

Gabriel Obertan Top of the Match

Was this the same winger who has been thoroughly mediocre since signing from Manchester United?! The Frenchman - playing against his former club - was superb, crafting the opening goal and giving the ri9ght half of Bordeaux’s defence nightmares all match.

Brought on at half-time for Rob Elliot, instantly showed he was calm and in control when rushing off his line to clear a dangerous through ball. Made a great save to deny Jussie with 16 minutes left on the clock.

    Dan Gosling

Brought on in the final 20 minutes for Tiote, the former Everton midfielder did not make a huge impression in his short time on the field of play.

    Gael Bigirimana

Brought on for Yohan Cabaye to ensure the side did not concede after going three goals ahead, the carbon copy of Tiote looked better on the ball than he has in recent first-team clashes, and passed the ball around neatly.

  • Cédric Carrasso

    Cédric Carrasso

The Bordeaux goalkeeper was helpless to stop the Magpies’ opener Smart catch denied Ameobi, was stumped by Henrique’s own goal and could not reach Papiss Cisse’s header. So hardly a stinker of a match, but then again his positioning and distribution were not worthy of the European stage really.

  • Henrique

    Henrique Flop of the Match

Many home fans thought he was lucky not to be sent off relatively early on for a cynical foul on Shola Ameobi on the edge of the Bordeaux box. His marking was also poor for the opening goal, he scored an own goal shortly before half-time and was simply unable to contain the Tyneside team’s attacking threat.

  • Ludovic Sané

    Ludovic Sané

Struggled to contain when on defensive duty and rarely showed attacking intent from the centre of midfield. A performance to forget for the Frenchman.

  • Mariano

    Mariano

Mistake let Obertan in for Newcastle’s first goal and looked shaky in his right-back position. In the second half Shane Ferguson compounded his misery by finding form up the pitch. His one saving grace was he showed potential going forward, but on the other hand this was never converted into a real opportunity.

  • Marc Planus

    Marc Planus

Like his centre-back partner, Planus was just unable to contain Newcastle when they infrequently attacked. Not as calamitous a performance as one or two of his team-mates, but still one to forget.

A bright spot at times in the crumbling Bordeaux back four, he kept Cisse quiet on the left but was unable to block Simpson’s cross for the second goal.

Skimmed a header over early on but did not look the menace many had predicted he might. Substituted at half-time by Francis Gillot.

    Jaroslav Plasil

Les Girondins’ skipper on Thursday night, his effort in the middle of the park was evident in the first half but this was never successfully turned into chances his strikers could use. Subbed at half-time.

  • Yoan Gouffran

    Yoan Gouffran

The Bordeaux No.9 was getting into threatening positions all night but floundering with his shots, perhaps because of the excellent defensive showing of the opposition marking him. Subbed with two-thirds of the match gone.

  • Jussiê

    Jussiê

His best chance to score was shot too near to Newcastle goalkeeper Harper and the rest of his output was weak to say the least.

  • Henri Saivet

    2.50

    Henri Saivet

Had a fruitful time for much of the match on the right wing but - again - his final ball for the Bordeaux forwards was lacking. Looked frustrated in the second half as he tried to go alone at time to no avail.

    Cheick Tidiane Diabaté

The forward was brought on at half-time with the intention of sparking life into a toothless team, but he was thoroughly unsuccessfully, thwarted on every turn by tackles and interceptions.
