East Bengal's Penn Orji initiates an attack against Pune FC, I-League

East Bengal scraped past Pune FC with a solitary goal in the third round of the I-League, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, on Monday. Edeh Chidi scored the all important goal in the 28th minute to snatch three points against the Red Lizards.

The home side started with Uga Okpara at the heart of their defense, while Manandeep Singh and Edeh Chidi were sent in attack with Penn Orji playing behind the duo.

Derrick Pereira, on the other side, opted for Daisuke Nishiguchi on the bench with James Moga preferred to partner Jeje Lalpekhlua. Izumi Arata returned to the starting XI in place of Khanthang Paite who was ruled out of the fixture for Pune FC as he joined them on-loan from East Bengal

The first chance befell Pune FC in the eighth minute as Arata Izumi on the left side as he kept Naoba Singh on the wrong side of the ball before turning and shooting, but failed to find the target.

Pune FC were the better side in the first quarter of a hour before East Bengal began to stamp their authority on the first half. Manandeep Singh had an opportunity but wasn't able to direct Penn Orji's cross from close range in the 20th minute.

Chidi made the best of a miss-pass by Pune FC defender Srikanth Ramu before outmuscling his markers into the box and beat keeper Shahinlal Meloly to his far post from the left.

The Nigerian remained hungry for more goals as the East Bengal striker saw a couple of his shots go abegging, including one that he blasted wide from inside the PFC area in the 48th minute.

Pereira, in quest for an equaliser, replaced defender Chika Wali with Daisuke Nishiguchi in the 52nd minute, after which Pune FC players seemed to have stepped on the gas as Jeje Lalpeklua and Douhou Pierre got close to scoring in moves that involved the Japanese substitute.

The away team's keeper Meloly also continued to keep his side in the match by blocking Manandeep's last attempt on goal in the 59th minute, before the East Bengal striker was replaced by Lalrindika Ralte in the following minute.

Orji continued his good form in the match as his left footed shot missed to find Pune FC's far post, while at the other end, Moga decided to pass to Jeje in a move in which the South Sudanese striker could have possibly scored the equaliser.

In the 65th minute, East Bengal keeper Abhijit Mondal took two attempts to deny Jeje's shot on goal after the Pune FC striker received Pierre's cross thanks to some good work by Izumi in the middle to initiate the attack.

Another event of lack of communication between Derrick Pereira's boys saw Jeje snatching the ball from Moga after it was the former's shot that was saved by the rival keeper, although East Bengal would not complain.

Pune FC's Karma Tsewang made way for Subhash Singh in the last 10 minutes, but it was Orji for the home side who kept threatening in attack, while Jeje's flashed his header wide from inside the box off a cross by Subash Singh.

Shahinlal Meloly, despite conceding a goal in the first half, was a consistent performer in the rest of the match and also prevented his side from going another goal down as the young Pune FC keeper dealt well in a one-on-one situation with East Bengal's Penn Orji during injury time.

Derrick Pereira's side would have only themselves to blame after missing some gilt-edged chances and have thus lost their first game in the league while East Bengal embraced their second win in three matches.
