Prayag United bagged their second win in their opening two games of the I-League 2012-13 season to surge above Pune FC in the table on account of a better goal difference.
Mohun Bagan failed to get anything out of the game despite taking the lead in the 19th minute at home when Odafa Okolie scored the opening goal of the game.
All three goals came in the first half of this encounter. A through ball from Denson Devadas set Okolie on his way who then rounded the goalkeeper Subrata Paul to slot the ball into the empty net. The goal marked a good start for the hosts who were eager to get their first points on the board this season.
However, Prayag did not have to wait long to snatch an equalizer. Carlos Hernadez was literally unplayable given that Bagan lacked a proper defensive midfielder as he had plenty of space to manoeveur. The visitors struck back in the 27th minute when Sukhen Dey sent in a cross which was deflected in by Khelemba Singh with Ranti Martins lurking. The goal was awarded to Dey despite suggestions of a possible own goal.
Kayne Vincent had a couple of chances which he should have converted. A Ranti Martins' low cross for which Arindam Bhattacharya came out to miss the ball. Vincent with the goal at his mercy, put his shot go wide.
Carlos Hernandez sent in a through-ball to Vincent which saw Bhattacharya pull-off a one-handed save, five minutes before the first half ended.
The teams appeared to be going into the break level-pegging but at the stroke of half time Carlos Hernandez played an excellent pass for Kayne Vincent who managed to get to the ball ahead of the onrushing goalkeeper to slot it past him and give his side the lead.
Neither side were able to score the game's fourth goal in the second half and Prayag United were able to see out the game for their first away win.
Mohun Bagan continuously played long balls towards Odafa but given that he is marked tightly the second ball was won by Prayag United with Hernandez the being the chief benefactor.
Odafa got away from his marker in the 88th minute and looked all set to score the equaliser but an alert Subrata Paul averted the danger by coming off his line.
The home side tried to switch things up by bringing on Stanley Okoroigwe and Snehashish Chakrabarty in the second half but to no avail.
