East Bengal have won their first game of the I-League season as they beat new boys United Sikkim FC 1-0 at the Paljor Stadium, Gangtok on Thursday afternoon. Their new signing, Lalrindika Ralte scored the winner eight minutes from time to register their only second

At an altitude of 5,800 feet, the home advantage could really have worked for Sikkim. As in the last game, United Sikkim were set up to defend and play on the break. In the first half, Chidi Edeh was a thorn in the Sikkim defence. Early on a solo run by him would surely have given them the lead, had it not been for Sikkim defender Sandesh's timed challenge.

Sikkim goalkeeper Yoon Tae almost single-handedly kept the Snow Lions in the game. He first saved a curling 25 yard free-kick from Chidi before pulling off a diving save to thwart the Nigerian after he met Baljit Sahni's cross.

East Bengal were having a majority of possession but were not able to make it count in the final third. Costa Rican Michael Rodriguez nearly got the lead for the home side with his direct free-kick, but East Bengal keeper Abhijit Mondal was equal to it.

In the second half, Budiram Tudu's mazy run came to a halt due to a challenge inside the box. The whole stadium appealed for a penalty, but it didnt garner the referee's interest.

There were a couple of chances for both sides as Penn Orji volleyed from range which just sailed over the bar. While at the other end, Anwar shot from close range took a deflection that resulted in a corner.

With the game heading towards a draw, Morgan threw on substitutes Sanju Pradhan and Lalrindika Ralte. This turned the game in favour the Kolkata side. Ralte fired home a free-kick in the 82nd minute which broke the Snow Lions' resistance.

East Bengal captain Mehtab Hussain was adjudged Man of the Match.
