Sporting Clube de Goa held East Bengal to a goalles stalemate in a round one match of the I-League played at the Fatorda Stadium, on Sunday evening.

Ekendra Singh started with an all-Indian line-up as Ogba Kalu Nnanna and Keita Boubacar were unfit to start the match, while Victorino Fernandes and injured Adil Khan were left on the bench with Dawson Fernandes fielded as the lone striker.

Trevor Morgan, on the other hand, named a strong starting 11, with Uga Okpara and Arnal Mondal as the central defenders while Manandeep Singh played upfront alongside Edeh Chidi, while Penn Orji was allowed a free role behind the two strikers.

Nigerian striker Edeh Chidi fired the first shot of the day in the fourth minute that flew a shade off target from Sporting's keeper Ashok Singh's right post.

It didn't take long for the Flaming Oranje to get their act together but Freiman Peixoto and Mackroy Peixoto were warded off by an alert East Bengal keeper Abhijit Mondal and midfielder Mehtab Hussain in two different instances.

Chidi then tested Ashok Singh with a swirling left-footer from outside the box, but the Sporting custodian was well-positioned to tip the ball above his post in the 20th minute.

The Goan side though, dominated procedings against a much stronger East Bengal line-up on the day with Jovel Martins and Freiman Peixoto doing enough to keep the East Bengal defenders on their toes.

Abhijit Mondal was required to pull off a vital save off the feet of Dawson Fernandes, who had a golden opportunity to drive the home side into the lead from close range, after Uga Okpara failed to read an overhead lob by Rojen Singh in the 39th minute.

Morgan introduced Robin Singh in place of the inefective Manandeep Singh, who seemed to be a shadow of the striker who starred for East Bengal in the Federation Cup.

The Englishman further tried to alter his side's composition as Lalrindika Ralte replaced Ishfaq Ahmed to add a fresh pair of legs to drive East Bengal's midfield, and later brought Baljit Singh in place of Sanju Pradhan.

In a few earlier events, Sporting goalkeeper Ashok Singh was kept busy in his area, having to tip over a Sanju Pradhan cross in the 55th minute while punching out another cross by Naoba Singh in the 59th minute.

Before all of the away side's substitution were used, Mathew Gonsalves produced a vital tackle on Edeh Chidi in the 70th minute, to dispossess the East Bengal striker who was charging dangerously into the Sporting box.

East Bengal substitute Baljit Singh could not score the illusive winner for his side as he missed a couple of half chances before both Mehtab Hussain and Chidi headed out from close range in the 90th minute.

Ekendra Singh relied on a couple of late substitutions which worked in his favour, as the Flaming Oranje secured a goalless draw against the Federation Cup champions.
