In what turned out to be a low scoring match, Dempo SC clinched the tie against high-flying Lajong through Clifford Miranda's second goal in as many matches. The result leaves Dempo as favourites to clinch a semi-final spot.
Lajong looked to have picked up from where they left off in the previous game. Lajong looked more likely to open the scoring and could have easily taken an early lead. But luck was not on their side as Ebi Sukore saw his shot hit the woodwork. That miss would haunt them later as on the stroke of half-time, Dempo were awarded a free kick. Clifford Miranda stepped up and scored, curling the ball deliciously into the top right corner.
The second half was more of an even contest, but Miranda's strike proved to be the winner. The midfielder has now netted in both group games for Dempo.
The win now puts Dempo on top with 4 points from two games, putting them in total control of their qualification from the group. All is not lost for Lajong as they have 3 points from their two matches. A win in the last match against the Pailan Arrows could see them through, provided Dempo fail to win their last group game against Mumbai FC.
Lajong's coach though felt that his side deserved better. He stated, "We were much stronger than our opponents and the boys were fighting till the last minute" he said post-match.
"They were fantastic and put in a good performance," Desmond Bulpin concluded.
