ONGC FC thrashed qualifier Kalighat M.S 5-1 in a matchday 1 clash of Group C in the 34th Federation cup, held at the Kanchanjungha Stadium in Siliguri
Bibek Bhowmick’s foreign imports did the trick for his side, as Japanese midfielder Katsumi Yusa and Nigerian striker Keshukwu Onyema shared four goals between them, while Sachin Gawas had scored the important equalizer for the side. James Gbilee had earlier put the Kolkatan outfit ahead.
Kalighat M.S, who had qualified for the main draw by thrashing Royal Wahingdoh and Vasco S.C, started in similar fashion against ONGC and scored the opener via Gbilee in the 15th minute, as the newly promoted I-League outfit struggled to come to terms with the poor ground conditions.
However slowly the club, which shall play some of its early I-League games in Delhi, started making their presence felt in the game and eventually scored the equalizer as Sachin Gawas got on the end of a pass from midfield in the 31st minute, to slot the ball home.
ONGC did not look back from there, as Gawas turned provider, putting in a delightful ball across Kalighat’s goalmouth, from which Onyema profited, putting his side in the lead.
The Nigerian’s movement continuously troubled the Kolkatan outfit’s defenders and at the stroke of half-time, he latched on to a chip by Yusa and coolly beat the opposition goalkeeper, making it 3-1 in favour of ONGC at half-time
The second half saw limited opportunities for both the side, before Onyema was replaced, mid-way through it. If the Kalighat defenders thought their troubled were at an end, they were to be proved wrong, as Yusa moved further up in attack and made it 4-1 for his side, after exchanging passes with midfielder Sorabuddin Mollik in the 80th minute.
With their opposition’s defense all over the place now, Yusa doubled his tally in the 88th minute to make the scoreline comprehensively in ONGC’s favour at full-time.
