Thirteen time Federation Cup winners, Mohun Bagan finally managed to record their first win in their final match of the group stages as they beat Mohammedan Sporting 2-1 with second half goals from CS Sabeeth (50th minute) and Manish Maithani (53rd minute). Mohammedan got a goal back through David Sunday (63rd minute).
The Mariners had a chance to take the lead in the 17th minute after Jewel Raja was hauled down in the penalty box and were awarded a penalty. Raja stepped up himself, but unfortunately for him his shot hit the upright. However it was Mohammedan who started the stronger side, as Gouranga Dutta struck the side netting once and missed from close range on another occasion. However as the half progressed, chances began to dry up, as play was confined to midfield.
Santosh Kashyap decided to use this match to test his bench strength in a competitive situation as he rested key players Odafa Okolie and Syed Rahim Nabi. Surprisingly they managed to put up a much better display without the star names.
Kashyap's half-time talk worked wonders as Mohun Bagan fired in two quick goals within 3 minutes giving the opponents no time to react, just after the restart. First it was Sabeeth in the 50th minute who latched onto a Raja through-ball and expertly slotted it in. Then just three minutes later, Manish doubled the lead with a well taken finish.
Shilton Paul, who filled in for Arindam Bhattacharya in goal, saved Bagan the blushes as he pulled off a fine save off Alfred Jaryan's effort. Finally after dominating possession, Mohammedan finally pulled one back as David Sunday scored around the hour mark.
However just five minutes later, Sunday missed two golden opportunities to level the scores as first he failed to beat Shilton, and then pulled one wide off target, when one-on-one with the custodian.
Mohun Bagan finish their campaign on four points behind Air India and Churchill Brothers while Mohammedan ended at the bottom of the table.
