Live Commentary

  • Wins for Turkey and Romania mean Hungary now have a mountain to climb to secure a play-off place. But tonight belongs to Netherlands and their new all-time top goalscorer Robin van Persie, who scored an excellent hat-trick. I've been Tom Maston, Good evening.
  • The full-time whistle is blown and Hungary are put out of their misery. 8-1 didn't flatter the Netherlands and on another night it could have been much more.
  • 90' + 1'
Into three minutes of stoppage time. It's almost cruel to keep Hungary out there given the mauling they have received.
  • 90'
    Goal Arjen Robben
GOAL!!! If anyone has deserved a goal tonight it has been Robben, and he has his reward with a sumptious free-kick. His effort from 25 yards leaves Bogdan rooted to the spot as the Bayern Munich man arguably scores the goal of the game.
  • 88'
As the clock runs down the Netherlands supporters can allow the party to begin early. The drums have been non-stop all evening and the Mexican waves are making their way around the stadium.
  • 86'
    Goal Rafael van der Vaart
GOAL!!! Seven for the Netherlands as van der Vaart gets his name on the scoresheet. Korcsmar concedes a free-kick on the edge of the box, and the midfielder's curling effort is deflected past the wrong-footed Bogdan.
  • 83'
Guzmics is slightly lucky to get away with a poor challenge having just been booked. Referee Atkinson signals he is on his last warning.
  • 82'
    Yellow Card Richárd Guzmics
  • 82'
Hungary take advantage of some sloppy play as Varga brings the ball forward, but with only Bruma at the back Nicolics can't control and the chance is gone.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionKevin Strootman Leroy Fer
Another change for the Netherlands as Fer replaces Strootman in midfield.
  • 80'
Almost an instant impact for Nicolics as he meets a Dzsudzak free-kick from the left but can only head wide.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionKrisztian Nemeth N. Nikolić
Final substitution for Hungary as the booked Nemeth is replaced by Nicolics.
  • 78'
Bogdan has made up for some of his errors with a fine save to deny van der Vaart. Blind is allowed to make his way to the byline before pulling the ball back for the Hamburg man, but the goalkeeper makes an excellent reflex stop at his near post.
  • 77'
Half-chance for Kuyt as the ball falls to him on the edge of the box. Robben gets in his way somewhat though and he can only fire wide.
  • 75'
Van der Vaart has been relatively quiet this evening, but he plays a lovely reverse pass that allows Robben room to cross. His centre is blocked out for a corner which is eventually cleared by the Hungary defence.
  • 73'
All too easy this for the Dutch as they continue to pass the ball relentlessly. Hungary have no answer to the home side's dominance.
  • 71'
A rare sight of goal for Hungary as Nemeth holds the ball up on the left before Koman fires high and wide from the edge of the area.
  • 69'
As if Hungary's night couldn't get any worse, they are going to end the night fourth in Group D. Romania are now 3-0 up in Andorra while Turkey have a two-goal lead in Estonia. Little action to tell you about in Amsterdam at present.
  • 67'
The way Netherlands are playing this could reach double figures. Everytime they come forward the Hungary defence look absolutely helpless.
  • 65'
    Own Goal Szilard Devecseri
GOAL!!! One of worst own goals you are ever likely to see. Lens' cross is too high for Kuyt, but under no pressure whatosever the substitute Devecseri powers a low header past Bogdan. Going from bad to worse for the visitors. That was abysmal.
  • 64'
    Yellow Card Nigel De Jong
A bit of contention here as de Jong and Nemeth have to be separated by their respective teammates. Eventually order is restored and both players are booked.
  • 64'
    Yellow Card Krisztian Nemeth
  • 62'
Korcsmar forces Vorm into a save as he shoots after getting forward for a throw-in, but the goalkeeper can easily collect the effort.
  • 61'
    SubstitutionRobin van Persie Dirk Kuyt
A standing ovation as Robin van Persie is replaced by Dirk Kuyt. A fantastic hat-trick from a Dutch legend.
  • 55'
    Yellow Card Szilard Devecseri
A Dzsudzsak shot is well blocked by the home defence, and as Robben picks up the loose ball he turns and runs towards the Hungary goal. The only way to stop him is to foul him, and Devecseri picks up a booking for his trouble.
  • 53'
    Assist Arjen Robben
  • 53'
    Goal Robin van Persie
GOAL!!! Robin van Persie is the Netherlands' all-time top goalscorer! His 41st strike is a delightful team goal as Strootman's cross from the left is headed into van Persie's path by Robben, and the striker completes his hat-trick with ease from close range.
  • 51'
Hungary certainly look more competitive in the second period and are closing the hosts down well when they have the ball. Plenty of spaces in their defensive third though as they chase the game.
  • 49'
Netherlands aren't just going to sit back in this second half as Robben and Lens again combine before the latter scuffs an effort wide with van Persie lurking at the back post.
  • 47'
    Penalty Goal Balázs Dzsudzsák
PENALTY TO HUNGARY! Maybe they can! Dzsudszak gets down the left and crossed, only for the ball to strike Bruma's arm and the referee points to the spot.
  • 47'
GOAL!!! Game on again? Possibly, as Dzsudszak sends Vorm the wrong way from 12 yards.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionTamas Kadar Szilard Devecseri
  • 46'
    SubstitutionTamas Hajnal Ákos Elek
  • 46'
Hungary get us back underway for the second half. Can they stage a miraculous comeback?
  • The players are making their way back onto the field, and Hungary are making a double-substitution, with Devecseri and Elek replacing Hajnal and Kadar.
  • Hungary's mood won't be helped with news that Romania now lead in Andorra while Turkey remain one up in Estonia. They will drop to fourth in the group if the scores remain the same. I will be back soon for the start of the second half.
  • The half-time whistle is blown and the Oranje are marking their World Cup qualification with a rampant display. They lead 4-0 and in truth it could have been more.
  • 45'
We are into two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half and Hungary look bereft of ideas. At present their World Cup dream is evaporating before their eyes.
  • 44'
    Goal Robin van Persie
GOAL!!! Robin van Persie draws level with Patrick Kluivert as the Netherlands' record goal-scorer, and celebrates by hugging the former striker on the sideline. It's another flowing move as Lens feeds Robben, who in turn finds van Persie free in the area and his header is too good for Bogdan.
  • 44'
    Assist Arjen Robben
  • 42'
The only real threat for the visitors have been Dzsudzsak's free-kicks, and he again tests Vorm with a powerful effort that the goalkeeper does well to parry away. Better from Hungary after a difficult five minutes.
  • 40'
OFF THE POST! This time it is Janmaat who is denied by the frame as Robben plays an inch-perfect through ball for the full-back. His effort beats Bogdan at the near post but the angle is too tight to beat the post. Hungary all over the place at the back.
  • 40'
OFF THE BAR! Almost a fourth for the hosts as the ball makes its way to Strootman on the edge of the box. The midfielder curls an effort towards the top corner and is denied by the crossbar.
  • 38'
    Goal Jeremain Lens
GOAL!!! 3-0 and you could say all over already. Lens has deserved a goal and now he has one. Strootman's pass over the top for Robben is half-cleared by Korcsmar, and Lens fires the rebound in first time past the despairing Bogdan.
  • 37'
Hungary are struggling to even get a touch on the ball never mind put some passes together. A reminder that the only other goal in this group has come in Estonia where Turkey are a goal to the good.
  • 35'
Little goalmouth action of late as van Gaal's side continue to keep Hungary at arms length. They will be very happy with their first half display so far.
  • 33'
Strootman has been excellent thus far, and he almost threads another excellent pass through the Hungary defence as van der Vaart races through. There is too much on it this time, though, and the visitors can clear.
  • 31'
Netherlands holding onto the ball as they look to put this game out of reach before the half-time break. Hungary chasing shadows at present.
  • 29'
Hungary waste a good opportunity to test Vorm as three of their players run at two Dutch defenders. Bode's final pass to Hajnal is poor though and the chance is gone.
  • 27'
Hungary chasing the game now as Dzsudzsak leaves Janmaat for dead down the left. His cross is a poor one though and sails over Vorm's head for a goal kick.
  • 25'
    Assist Jeremain Lens
  • 25'
    Goal Kevin Strootman
GOAL!!! It's two now as another cross isn't dealt with by the Hungary defence. This time the ball is in from Lens on the left after Korcsmar took the ball out of Bogdan's hands, and Strootman makes no mistake with his header. The goalkeeper was really sold out by his defender for that one.
  • 24'
So close to a second for the home side as van Persie sends Lens clear. The winger cuts inside onto his right foot but he loses his footing at the wrong moment and fires his shot well over the top from around ten yards. A let-off for the visitors.
  • 22'
Van Persie again gets clear of Kadar, but the defender makes amends in blocking Strootman's effort. Meanwhile, Turkey have gone 1-0 up in Estonia, so that would mean they would move above Hungary into second-place should the scores remain the same.
  • 20'
Janmaat has certainly been involved in the attacking third so far this evening, and this time it is he who threatens Bogdan's goal as a clearance from a corner finds him around 25 yards from goal. His shot is poor, though, and drifts wide of the post.
  • 18'
Hungary win a free-kick in a dangerous area, but after Dzsudzsak's effort is blocked by the wall, Kadar has to come across at the other end to cut out a through ball intended for Robben.
  • 16'
    Assist Daryl Janmaat
  • 16'
    Goal Robin van Persie
GOAL!!! It's been coming for the Dutch, and surprise, surprise it's Robin van Persie who has found the net. Janmaat isn't closed down on the right and has time to pick the striker out, and the Manchester United man loops a header over Bogdan. The goalkeeper maybe should have done better, but that won't matter to the hosts. 1-0.
  • 14'
Hungary launch a counter attack as Nemeth and Bode trade passes before de Jong gets back to concede a corner. Visiting forwards looking dangerous against the inexperienced Dutch defence.
  • 12'
Van Persie is certainly putting himself about a bit in these early stages as he chases after a Lens pass on the left flank. The striker is squeezed out though and the ball trickles out for a goal kick.
  • 10'
First half-chance for Hungary as Dzsudzsak tries to catch Vorm out with a free-kick from the right that is arrowed into the near post. The Swansea goalkeeper gets down well to turn it around, though the linesman believes the touch came behind the line and awards a goal kick.
  • 9'
There is a bit of a worry here for van Gaal with Strootman receiving treatment after taking a blow to his foot while attacking the latest corner. It looks as if he can continue for now though.
  • 8'
It brings more trouble for the visitors as Bogdan flaps at it before the ball falls at van Persie's feet. He is well closed down though and his effort is blocked.
  • 7'
Another period of possession ends in Janmaat getting forward and seeing his low cross deflected behind. What will this corner bring?
  • 5'
Netherlands keeping the ball with ease as they look to play the passing game that has become synonymous with Dutch sides over the years. Hungary struggling to get their foot on the ball at present.
  • 3'
The resulting dead ball causes havoc as Bruma meets it with a powerful header, only for Koman to head it off the line. The ball is sent back in where Lens fires in from close range, but the linesman's flag is up for offside. Bright start by the hosts.
  • 3'
Strootman already looking to impose himself as a chipped ball over the top sends Robben in behind. He is forced away from goal but wins a corner.
  • 1'
English referee Martin Atkinson blows his whistle and the hosts kick-off in their all orange kit. Hungary are in all white.
  • There are already some 'Brasil 2014' scarves in the crowd as the Dutch anthem rings out. The 2010 beaten finallists will be hoping to set down some markers ahead of the tournament, starting with tonight's fixture. We are about to get underway...
  • 52,000 people make a whole lot of noise as the players make their way onto the field. The roof is closed in Amsterdam, so their is bound to be an excellent atmosphere. Here come the anthems...
  • The teams are in the tunnel in Amsterdam. We are five minuted from kick-off in this crucial World Cup qualifier.
  • With Hungary very much in the mix for a play-off berth, I'll also be keeping half an eye on events in the matches involving Group D rivals Romania and Turkey,. Both are away from home, with the Turks travelling to Estonia and Romania in Andorra.
  • As always the Amsterdam ArenA is a sea of orange with the Dutch supporters getting their first chance to show their appreciation to the players that have reached the World Cup. They will be hopeful of an eighth win in nine qualifying matches.
  • So the big news is that Robin van Persie is fit to start for the hosts despite being doubtful with a toe injury. Arjen Robben is also back in the side after suspension ruled him out of the win over Andorra that secured their qualification. Nigel de Jong is also welcomed back into the eleven by Louis van Gaal.
  • Hungary: Bogdan, Guzmics, Vanczak, Kadar, Korcsmar; Dzsudzsak, Varga, Koman, Hajnal; Bode, Nemeth.
  • Netherlands: Vorm; Janmaat, Blind, Vlaar, Bruma; De Jong, Strootman; van der Vaart, Robben, Lens; van Persie.
  • With just over 20 minutes until kick-off, let's take a look at the two sides that will line-up at the home of both Ajax and the Dutch national side...
  • Though the Dutch were the first European side to qualify for this summer's tournament in South America, this group still remains tight. Hungary, Turkey and Romania still harbour hopes of reaching the play-offs, with tonight's visitors the best placed of the three despite having to take on the Oranje in their own back yard. Hungary finish their campaign against minnows Andorra on Tuesday, with Turkey taking on the Dutch, so a draw here against an under-strength home side would not be disastrous.
  • Hello and welcome to live coverage of the World Cup qualifying match between Netherlands and Hungary in Group D of the UEFA section. The home side have already booked their place at Brazil 2014, but with ranking points available Louis van Gaal will be keen for his side to continue their unbeaten run in the qualifiers. Hungary, on the other hand, are currently second in the group, and a surprise win would put them on the cusp of a play-off berth. I'm Tom Maston and I will be guiding you through events in Amsterdam.
