Player Ratings: Portugal 1-0 Russia

Goal took in the action at Estadio da Luz, where Helder Postiga's early goal took the Seleccao top of the group and ended the perfect record of Fabio Capello's team

    Rui Patricio

Nearly left with egg on his face after a weak punch on a cross left Russia with an open goal, which they missed. He was not tested much otherwise, but made a smart save at his near post to thwart Aleksandr Kerzhakov, and smothered from Roman Shirokov late on.

The newly-minted Fenerbahce signing was assured at the back alongside Luis Neto, mopping up loose balls effectively and often stepping ahead of the defensive line to snuff out danger centrally before an attack got going.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    Fabio Coentrao

Like Joao Pereira and Vieirinha on the opposite flank, the left-back was on the same wavelength as Cristiano Ronaldo in the attacking third. But he appeared prone to wobbles at the back, and was perhaps fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty after catching the ball with his trailing arm.

  • João Pereira

    João Pereira

Showed a good understanding with Vieirinha on the right flank, and was often found high up the pitch, overlapping to good effect to support the attack. Generally attentive in his defensive duties as well.

  • Neto

The defender was given his competitive debut by Paulo Bento, and he always looked comfortable marshalling the home side's backline, hardly putting a foot wrong at the back and marking Aleksandr Kerzhakov out of the game.

  • Joao Moutinho

Joao Moutinho Top of the Match

Completely in control in the centre of the park, as virtually all of Portugal’s meaningful attacks were channeled through him. His ability to hold onto the ball in tight spaces and release to his teammates with accuracy was indispensable in maintaining his side’s attacking momentum.

  • Miguel Veloso

    Miguel Veloso

His free kick to set Helder Postiga up for the opening goal was an inch-perfect delivery, and the Dynamo Kyiv midfielder showed a propensity to cause problems when whipping the ball into the area. Did not neglect his defensive duties, putting in a tidy shift in the middle.

  • Raúl Meireles

    Raúl Meireles

A solid two-way performance, pressing the Russian midfield diligently and on occasion, driving forward with the ball at his feet to open up attacking avenues for his side.

  • Vieirinha

    Vieirinha

Constantly looked to push forward towards the byline and stretch play on the right flank. He was found in a few promising positions by Joao Moutinho and Miguel Veloso, and in turn, managed to set up a few chances for his team-mates, with Cristiano Ronaldo wasting the best of them.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Generally positive stuff from the Real Madrid forward, showing a fair bit of drive when on the ball. But overall, his performance did not quite have the flourish that we have become accustomed to, and though he was thwarted by Igor Akinfeev twice, he was wayward with his other attempts on goal.

  • Hélder Postiga

    Hélder Postiga

Showed good instincts to latch onto a Miguel Veloso delivery and steer his side into the lead on the volley. The forward looked a genuine threat leading the line, as he constantly endeavoured to get himself on the end of attacks.

A real livewire off the bench, exciting the crowd with his directness and willingness to take on his man.

    Ruben Amorim

Picked up a nasty looking injury almost immediately after his arrival off the bench, but was thankfully able to walk it off eventually.

  • Igor Akinfeev

    Igor Akinfeev

Were it not for the keeper's supreme presence, Russia may have well lost by more. He made two excellent stops to repel Cristiano Ronaldo twice in the second half.

    Alexander Anyukov

The right-back was already looking uncomfortable against the pace of Ronaldo in the opening exchanges, and after failing to shake off a knock, departed after only half an hour.

  • Sergey Ignashevich

    Sergey Ignashevich

Made a few crucial last-ditch interceptions and clearances in the second half, and was not afraid to put his body on the line for his side.

    Vasiliy Berezutskiy

Could have communicated with Dmitriy Kombarov better on Miguel Veloso's set piece - as a result, Postiga was left without a marker and needed no second invitation to score. Not always convincing in defence.

    Dmitriy Kombarov

Caught in two minds when isolated against two Portuguese attackers at the back post when defending a set piece, and ended up tracking the wrong man, as Postiga ghosted in unmarked to score the opener.

Igor Denisov Flop of the Match

The captain was drafted back into the starting XI after missing Russia’s last game against Brazil due to illness, but he could not inspire his team on the pitch, as he often struggled to contain the Portuguese attack in his role anchoring the midfield.

  • Roman Shirokov

    Roman Shirokov

Apart from a brief spell towards the end of the first half where Russia had Portugal on the ropes, he found it hard to really make a mark on the game, and spent most of his time chasing Portuguese shadows off the ball. Had a chance very late on to steal a point for his side, but fluffed his shot right at the keeper.

  • Vladimir Bystrov

    Vladimir Bystrov

Much like the rest of the Russia attack, he was largely on the periphery of the game for long spells, but nearly awoke from his slumber in stunning fashion with a spectacular overhead kick that was inches too high.

  • Viktor Faizulin

    2.00

    Viktor Faizulin

Offered his team absolutely nothing in an attacking sense, and Fabio Capello hauled him off with little over 20 minutes on the clock to attempt to shake his side out of their slumber.

  • Yuri Zhirkov

    2.50

    Yuri Zhirkov

Rarely found embarking on one of his trademark runs down the left as the pressure from Portugal kept him penned back in his own half for the vast majority of the game.

  • Aleksandr Kerzhakov

    Aleksandr Kerzhakov

For the most part, he was isolated up front, but nearly broke free once to draw his team level just after the hour mark, although Rui Patricio saved his finish with little trouble. Never stopped trying though, and was the best of a bad bunch of Russian attacking players.

Subbed in for Victor Faizulin after only 20 minutes, and shortly after his arrival, missed one of Russia’s best chances, stabbing wide of an open goal from 12 yards out when Rui Patricio was out of position.
