Europa League Player Ratings: Young Boys 3-5 Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers' side edged a tight encounter featuring some wayward defending, as 20-year-old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey came off the bench to seal the win

    Marco Wölfli

Could do nothing about the bizarre opening goal, and the second beat him equally easily. Was expecting a touch from Borini on the third that never came, and couldn't really do much about Shelvey's double.

  • Juhani Ojala

    Juhani Ojala

Could do nothing about his unfortunate own goal in the opening minutes with the ball headed straight at him by a team-mate. Made amends, though, by nodding home the hosts' second equaliser of the night, even if it did take a touch off his shoulder.

    Elsad Zverotić

A fairly sloppy performance all-round from the defence, and he wasn't any different.

Hurried his header under no pressure, but was pretty unfortunate to see it rebound off Ojala and in.

    Dušan Veškovac

Got forward well, but was part of a sloppy defence that shipped five goals.

    Alexander Farnerud

Claimed for a penalty after running through and falling under a challenge from Carragher, but it didn't merit anything. Had a mixed evening though, with a horrendous effort from a free-kick followed up by a great curling drive that clipped the post.

  • Mario Raimondi

    Mario Raimondi

Clattered into the back of Stewart Downing to pick up a needless booking only 15 minutes in, and was quiet thereafter.

    Scott Sutter

A pretty quiet night for the England-born midfielder. Had only one opportunity to strike at goal, but got his lob wrong with Jones out of position.

  • Raphael Nuzzolo

    Raphael Nuzzolo

Was the benefactor of some very sloppy defending from the visitors to fire the hosts level.

  • Raul Bobadilla

    Raul Bobadilla

Put in a great cross for the second goal, and showed quick feet to cause the Liverpool defenders problems in the second half in particular, holding off three players to find an assist for Zarate.

    Gonzalo Zarate

Was busy throughout, but never really looked like troubling the goal until he was played in by Bobadilla to chip a great finish over Jones from the edge of the area. He was subbed moments later.

Came on late, but couldn't help his side to a point.

    Bradley Jones

Perhaps didn't communicate well with Enrique for Young Boys' goal in the first half, but surely wasn't expecting his defender to nick it away from him. Got a hand on the shot, but couldn't stop it going in. Didn't have much of a chance for the second, and was well beaten on the third.

  • José Enrique

    José Enrique

One of the more senior defenders in the team, but showed extreme naivety in gifting the hosts a goal before half-time, taking the ball almost from Jones' hands before giving it away with the goal gaping. Found himself caught out of position too often for a defender of his experience.

  • Sebastián Coates

    Sebastián Coates

Was another culprit as Liverpool gave away sloppy goals, as he rushed out of position and didn't win his tackle on the third goal, leaving gaps in behind. Made amends for it with a good header to get them level though.

  • Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher Flop of the Match

Looked very off the pace, aiming a wild kick in the build up to Young Boys' equaliser. Had an earlier shout for a penalty against him turned down correctly as he muscled Farnerud off the ball. Lost out to Bobadilla badly though for the third goal, and couldn't get back to clear off the line in time.

  • Andre Wisdom

    Andre Wisdom

Made a fantastic leap to nod Liverpool into the lead just before half-time, and played some nice stuff out on the right wing as well.

  • Nuri Sahin

    Nuri Sahin

His passing, as you would expect, was sublime, but he could have done with someone to aim for in attack. Didn't spot the run outside him for the hosts' third goal.

  • Jordan Henderson

    Jordan Henderson

Struggled to really make an impression on the game, with some sloppy passing on occasion, but got forward to support well and laid on a good assist for Shelvey's goal.

  • Stewart Downing

    Stewart Downing

Got to the byline well, and I suppose you have to credit him with an assist despite not finding a team-mate for the opener. Made some good runs in the second half and put in some dangerous crosses, but there was no-one in the box.

  • Suso

    Suso

Led the defenders on a merry dance late in the first half, but just couldn't find Pacheco with the final pass from the byline. Looked lively though.

  • Oussama Assaidi

    Oussama Assaidi

Looked dangerous on occasion, but was farily ineffectual and eventually replaced in the second half.

Generally looked tiday, but the lone striker role didn't quite suit him in this formation.

    Fabio Borini

Did he get a touch or didn't he? It didn't really matter, but his introduction did add a bit of weight to the Liverpool attack.
