Player Ratings: Valencia 4-2 BATE Borisov

Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at Mestalla, as Los Che survived a brief scare from the Belarusians to run out comfortable winners

    Guaita

Rather sloppy to let a free kick slip in at his near post in what was his only real test of the night.

  • Aly Cissokho

    Aly Cissokho

Got forward very well to support the attack, as BATE's lack of offensive punch left him with barely anything to do in his own half.

    Adil Rami

Games such as this will never be a true examination of his credentials, as he was rarely tested by a stagnant offensive effort from the visitors.

  • João Pereira

    João Pereira

Given barely anything to think about in defence by the visitors, but was sloppy to give away a free kick that was converted by Bressen for BATE’s first goal.

  • Jose Andrés Guardado

    Jose Andrés Guardado

Buzzed about the left flank with intent, and won a penalty after a fortuitous decision by the referee on a challenge that occurred just outside the area. A consistent threat for the home side, and stretched play well.

  • Ricardo Costa

    Ricardo Costa

Strong at the back as he dominated in the air when BATE elected to hoof balls into his box in a desperate bid to create something.

  • Fernando Gago

    Fernando Gago

His passing and vision always left BATE on the back foot, and he set up Feghouli’s goal with a perfectly weighted pass to split two defenders. Seemed set to boss the midfield, but a horrendous mistake late on allowed the visitors back into the game.

  • Sofiane Feghouli

Sofiane Feghouli Top of the Match

Often got the better of Bordachev in their tussles on the flanks, and was able to create a few goalscoring opportunities for the home side. Nearly scored himself with a half volley that flashed off target, but was far more deadly in the second half as he slotted home a counterattack to make it 3-0, before ending the game with a half-volley at the far post.

    Tino Costa

Never looked like being bettered today as he controlled the midfield from start to finish. Comfortable on the ball, and not afraid to track back and put himself about. Class showing.

  • Jonas

    3.50

    Jonas

Formed a dangerous attacking quartet with Guardado, Feghouli and Soldao. Opened the scoring with a somewhat fortuitous half volleyed finish, but the goal was just reward for his effort on the night, as he showed great ability in advanced positions.

  • Roberto Soldado

    Roberto Soldado

Lucky to still be on the pitch after a petulant kick on Bordachev, and the decision may have well cost BATE as they suffered from his movement and guile leading the line. Buried a confident penalty in the first-half to make it 2-0.

Substitutions

    Ever Banega

Added further poise to the midfield in the second-half.

A few touches up front in his short spell.

    Andrey Gorbunov

Could do nothing to stop the goals, but did not inspire much confidence.

    Artem Radkov

Conceded a penalty for a trip on Guardado, though he was somewhat unlucky as the incident occurred just outside the box.

  • Maksim Bordachov

    Maksim Bordachov

Struggled to contain Feghouli, and was left bamboozled by the Algerian, who beat him several times, including one humiliating dribble just before half time.

  • Egor Filippenko

    Egor Filippenko

His play at the back prevented the scoreline from being even higher, as he halted a number of dangerous attacks in their tracks.

  • Denis Polyakov

    Denis Polyakov

Tried hard in the first-half, but as the game wore on, fatigue seemed to be affecting him as Valencia breached his flank more and more.

  • Dmitri Likhtarovich

    Dmitri Likhtarovich

NA inadequate job shielding the defence, as the likes of Jonas and Feghouli were allowed to run riot. Left chasing shadows all over the pitch.

  • Aleksandr Volodko

    2.50

    Aleksandr Volodko

Rarely got much going out on the right wing, and often seemed isolated. His side could have used some more impetus from him.

  • Renan Bressan

    3.50

    Renan Bressan

Brought BATE back into the game with a free kick that sneaked in at the near post, and was effective when leading the rare forays into the Valencia half. Gave the hosts a lot to think about in the latter stages of the game.

  • Aliaksandr Hleb

    2.50

    Aliaksandr Hleb

The former Arsenal man found it hard to inspire his team in attack, as Valencia’s midfield played with far more purpose and energy. Bypassed in the centre of the park multiple times.

  • Dmitri Baga

    Dmitri Baga

Came alive later in the second-half, as he found a few avenues forward out wide. Never able to add a consistent end product to his play though.

Vitali Rodionov Flop of the Match

Registered an assist for Mozolevski's late goal, but was otherwise a peripheral figure in the match. Forced to feed off scraps for most of the contest.

Scored a potentially crucial goal after pouncing on a Gago mistake, but his team were not able to push forward to equalise.
