A couple of nervy kicks early on, but the Spaniard soon seemed to settle and dealt with a handful of crosses well. Passed his first real test when he made an impressive double save to deny Galatasaray on the counter attack.
Looked impressive on his return to the starting line-up, though in truth Galatasaray's attack offered little versatility and was comfortably dealt with for most of the night.
Kept quiet for much of the first half by Eboue and Amrabat, but looked more adventurous in the second period and won his side a penalty with a strong forward burst.
Very fortunate not to concede a penalty in the first minute of the match for a trip on Bulut, but from then on looked commanding against the physical threat of Elmander, and nearly scored with a header shortly before the hour mark. Booked a little harshly for a raised arm against Buruk Yilmaz.
Bamboozled Hakan Balta on more than one occasion early on before Galatasaray doubled-up on the Ecuador international and curtailed his attacking threat.
An effective outlet on the left but was too often exposed in the first half as Nani failed to track the forward runs of Eboue.
Flashes of brilliance were marred by flashes of carelessness on the ball in a mixed first half for the veteran, who seemed to fade from the action in the second period as Galatasaray began to dominate the middle.
Took his goal superbly early on, showing great composure to round Muslera and slot home. His passing was assured all night as he distributed well to the flanks, Valencia in particular.
Pulled the strings well in United's attack as he floated confidently between the lines. Combined well with Nani early in the second half and only a last-ditch tackle denied a clear shot on goal.
R. van Persie
A very quiet night for the Dutchman, as he struggled early on to link with his fellow attackers with one or two sloppy passes. A poor first touch cost him a clear-cut chance for a goal on his European debut for the club, before he was booked for a late lunge on Altintop. Replaced by Chicharito with 10 minutes to go.
Denied by a good save early on after some fine link-up play with Kagawa, and combined well with the Japanese star throughout the match. Offered only a token obstacle in defence against the adventurous Eboue. His poor penalty was easily saved by Muslera, and his attempts to win another almost allowed Galatasaray to equalise on the break.
Made a good save when one-on-one with Nani early on but could not stop Carrick from getting the better of him a minute later. His save from Nani's penalty was a comfortable one, as he refused to be fooled by the stuttering run-up.
Began the match a little shakily as he conceded two needless corners in quick succession, and was perhaps fortunate to survive appeals for a penalty after Muslera parried the ball against his arm. A willing runner going forward, he could have caused United's defence real problems, but his crossing was too inconsistent.
Another who performed well to keep Van Persie quiet, he also provided a crucial last-minute block to stop Chicharito from putting the game to bed.
Offered less of an attacking threat than Eboue on the opposite flank, and was exposed by the pace of Valencia and the vision of Carrick on more than one occasion.
Left for dead as Carrick ghosted past him early on for United's opener, but otherwise put in an assured display. A commanding presence in the air, he kept Van Persie quiet for the first hour of the match.
Physically too strong for Nani to handle defensively, he almost got his side level with a crisp low drive early in the second half. Was a consistent threat down the United left, and almost provided the assist for an equaliser with a devilish cross.
Offered little to nothing going forward but protected his back four very well, particularly as Kagawa began to fade from the game. Rarely conceding possession, he kept the side ticking over with efficient use of the ball.
Missed the best chance of the first half for his side as he fired wide from 18 yards out when unmarked following a short free-kick. Worked tirelessly to nullify the passing threat of Scholes, especially in the second half.
The main fulcrum for Galatasaray's attacks, he linked well early on between midfield and target-man Elmander, but began to fade from the action as the game wore on. Gave away the penalty for a clumsy trip on Rafael early in the second half.
Withdrawn after just 15 minutes in place of Johan Elmander, though there appeared to be no injury involved.
Was unlucky to see a superb curling effort clip the top of the crossbar after just 10 minutes. Consistently the visitors' brightest attacking outlet in the first half, keeping Rafael subdued until he was replaced by Colak after 65 minutes as he began to tire.
Made his long-awaited return to first-team action to tumultuous applause from the home faithful. Did not have much time to stamp his mark on the game, but it was a welcome run-out for the Scotland man.
Replaced the ineffective Van Persie for the final ten minutes, but fluffed three clear-cut chances in his brief cameo, although one of these was due to some fine last-ditch defending.
Came on after 65 minutes to reinvigorate the Galatasaray left-flank, which had become less effective after half-time. Bright on the ball, he was denied by a superb De Gea stop with 15 minutes to go.
Replaced Bulut early on and caused trouble with his physical presence, but lacked the pace to worry Evans and Vidic unduly.
