Federation Cup Preview: ONGC FC vs Sporting Club de Goa - A battle for top spot in Group C
Can Bibek Bhowmick's side outclass Ekendra Singh's Sporting side who top the group going into the final matchday?
By Srinivasan Mohan
The last round of matches in Group C will be ones to watch as three sides are in contention to make it to the semi-finals. Both Sporting and East Bengal are on 4 points with only the number of goals scored separating them in the points table. Sporting battled hard to get a 3-2 win over a spirited Kalighat side who made things difficult for the Goans. They will now face an uphill task against an ONGC side who would hope to book a berth in the semis as well at the SSB ground, Siliguri.
A win against ONGC does not guarantee the Goans progression, since Trevor Morgan’s East Bengal side could leapfrog them into first place by winning by a bigger margin against Kalighat.
A draw would see them dependent on the result of the East Bengal-Kalighat game, with a win or draw for Kalighat still being enough for the Goans. Sporting have been amongst the goals and will be looking to continue that rich vein of form into this crucial tie.
Sporting's Dawson Fernandes netted two goals against Kalighat
ONGC too have a chance of making the semis provided they beat Sporting and Kalighat pull of a victory over East Bengal. ONGC hammered 5 past a hapless Kalighat and went down fighting against East Bengal in a close encounter. Katsumi Yusa has been profilic in front of goal as he has scored three of ONGC's six goals. Bibek Bhowmick's side will not be ready to hand this tie on a platter to Sporting and will look to use their enterprise and bravado to triumph in what is a very competitive group
