Sporting Club de Goa will begin their Federation Cup campaign against the might of East Bengal in this Group C encounter. Sporting, who finished eighth in last season's I-League, will look to get off to the best possible start in the Cup campaign after a disappointing first round exit in the Durand Cup. The Goan outfit, known for their attacking brand of football, have retained most of their players from last season. However star striker James Moga moved to Pune FC during the summer and it has left a sizeable void in the forward line. Sporting moved into damage control mode by signing Cameroon striker Bertrand Bong.
Coach Ekendra Singh prefers a compact 4-3-2-1 system with new recruit Pratesh Shirodkar and Joseph Perreira supporting Bong. Boubacar Keita will look to keep things tight at the back with wingbacks Adil Khan and Rovan Pereira expected to provide some much needed width.

East Bengal, have managed to retain coach Trevor Morgan after he had resigned at the end of last season citing issues with the management. Morgan's first task was to draft in a replacement for striker Tolgay Ozbey who had moved to rivals Mohun Bagan. Chidi Edeh from Salgoacar was brought in amidst skepticism considering his poor season with the Goan club. India striker Manandeep Singh was signed along with creative midfielder Cavin Lobo to increase the depth of this formidable East Bengal squad.

Coach Morgan spoke of the need to integrate new players into his system which he has used during his tenure at the club. They had a decent pre-season due to their involvement in the Calcutta League.
History is on the Kolkata club's side as they have remained unbeaten against the Goan side in the last five meetings. However Sporting will be up and ready to give a tough fight to the Bengal side and probably scupper East Bengal's plans to start the Federations Cup on a high note.
The Red and Gold's are definetely one of the favourites to win the Federation Cup title and the onus will be on Morgan's side to start the season with a trophy.
