Live Commentary

  • Thank you very much for joining us this evening for LIVE! text commentary on Celtic's superb 2-0 win away at Helsingborgs. I've been Chris Teale, and I really appreciate you following me tonight. We'll speak again soon, but goodbye for now.
  • 90' + 3'
FULL TIME, and Celtic should be very pleased with their night’s work. They take a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Kris Commons and Georgios Samaras, but the plaudits should go to goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who has kept the away side in this game thanks to some superb saves. Helsingborgs had their chances, but were wasteful at times while also denied by Forster at other times, and with this defeat they face a very difficult task at Celtic Park next Wednesday. With two away goals, it is Celtic who are in the driving seat.
  • 90'
    SubstitutionKris Commons Tony Watt
  • 89'
    Yellow Card Álvaro Márcio Santos
  • 86'
It's Charlie Mulgrew's turn to rattle the woodwork, as a first-time shot from just outside the area cannons off the bar and out of play. That's the second time Celtic have found the wooden part of the goal, although sadly not through James Forrest. For(r)est, wood? Get it? Please?
  • 84'
Helsingborgs are still coming forward, but their desperation to get a goal is affecting them, and they're committing a few fouls now. Celtic hanging on for the last five minutes, and what would be a very very good result.
  • 78'
From the sublime to the ridiculous from Samaras. He's in acres of space, and could square the ball to Commons for an easy finish. But, for some inexplicable reason, he looks to guide it into the far corner, and it goes wide. Poor Kris is furious with that, and rightly so.
  • 75'
    Assist Kris Commons
  • 75'
    Goal Georgios Samaras
GOAL!!!! CELTIC HAVE A SECOND!!!! In comes a corner, and there's Georgios Samaras at the back post to nod home to give Celtic a 2-0 lead! Could that be a crucial goal in both this game and this tie?
  • 72'
That's a very clever header at the back post from Bedoya, who tries to divert the ball back into the box beyond Forster, but the big goalkeeper is alert to the danger and catches comfortably. He's been man of the match so far.
  • 67'
Another great chance there for Mahlangu. Bodoya drives a cross into the box from the right, and the South African skies his sliding shot well into the stands. Helsingborgs still look dangerous.
  • 66'
    SubstitutionJoe Ledley Kelvin Wilson
  • 65'
    SubstitutionT. Sørum Álvaro Márcio Santos
  • 63'
    SubstitutionErik Wahlstedt David Accam
  • 63'
Helsingborgs are starting to pile on the pressure, and another corner forces Fraser Forster to punch it away. He's been on his game tonight, thankfully for Celtic's fans and players.
  • 62'
    Yellow Card Thomas Rogne
Well well, it's a yellow card for Thomas Rogne of Celtic as he couldn't quite cope with the fast attacking play of Helsingborgs.
  • 56'
That was very close to being 2-0. Celtic swing in a corner, and Joe Ledley's header touches the bar and it goes over. That could have been the game, and possibly the tie, settled.
  • 54'
    Yellow Card Ardian Gashi
The Swedes are also starting to chase the game and make some heavy tackles, and Ardian Gashi sees his name taken for a rash challenge.
  • 50'
They're really starting to commit players forward, and another Helsingborgs shot goes wide of the post from outside the box.
  • 49'
Snap shot there from Mahlangu, but it's saved comfortably by Forster. Bright start from the Swedes, who don't want to go to Celtic Park trailing on aggregate.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionBeram Kayal James Forrest
Meanwhile, it's a change for Celtic at half time, as Beram Kayal makes way for James Forrest. An attacking change there for the away side.
  • 46'
Well, we're back for the second half. It's Celtic who get things going again, still somehow sitting on that 1-0 lead.
  • 45' + 1'
HALF TIME, and Celtic can be cautiously optimistic about their evening’s work so far. They lead 1-0 thanks to a superb Kris Commons volley in the second minute, and at times have looked threatening in attack. However, they do look vulnerable when defending, and there have been some horrendous errors that have gone unpunished by the Helsingborgs attackers. They’re in the lead, with a crucial away goal, but Celtic will need to defend better, and will probably need a second goal to make things a little more comfortable in the return leg at Celtic Park.
  • 45'
One minute left in the half, and Celtic are clinging on a bit right now.
  • 40'
The Swedes are looking good here as the first half draws to a conclusion.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Fraser Forster
Apparently, it's never too early to waste time, as Fraser Forster sees his name taken for delaying the game a little too long as he prepares to take a goal kick.
  • 32'
Beram Kayal tries a ridiculous scissor kick clearance that doesn't come off, and Nikola Djurdic puts the resulting half volley over the bar. Celtic aren't looking great at the back.
  • 29'
Yet another chance for Helsingborgs. Celtic seem to not want to hit the ball into row Z to avert the danger, and Alejandro Bedoya nearly steals in with a near post header, but it goes wide. They're living a bit too dangerously right now, are Celtic.
  • 28'
    Yellow Card Charles Mulgrew
  • 24'
Matthews has dodged several bullets there, not just one. He makes an appalling error to gift the ball to May Mahlangu, who is one-on-one with Forster. However, Matthews manages to get back just in time to help avert the danger, but how that went unpunished I have no idea.
  • 20'
Yet another fine save from Forster to deny Thomas Sorum, who is clean through on goal. Forster manages to get a big hand on the ball and divert it away for a corner. Yet another superb chance for the Swedes, and all of a sudden they're on the front foot.
  • 16'
Meanwhile, Gary Hooper is causing some problems with his strength, but the referee thinks he's being too aggressive. Hooper has the upper body strength of a rhino compared to the Helsingborgs defenders, who are being swatted aside at every opportunity by the big striker.
  • 15'
Helsbingborgs come forward, and see another low shot saved well by Forster. That was a brilliant chance for 1-1 right there.
  • 11'
Hearts in mouths there, as Charlie Mulgrew gives the ball away in his own half, and it requires a low save from Forster to avert the danger. They look good going forward, but need to be careful at the back.
  • 10'
It's a great cross in from Adam Matthews, but it's too high for Samaras at the back post. Celtic look very dangerous coming forward.
  • 8'
Helsingborgs have a free kick, and it's lofted in towards Celtic's goal, but Fraser Forster is there to shepherd it out of play.
  • 6'
Samaras is on fire (for a change), as he's having a good deal of joy already on the left. His cross from Commons' goal was brilliant, and he's finding a lot of space already.
  • 5'
What a start for Celtic, and their travelling support are in superb voice, far outsinging their Swedish counterparts. It's a precious away goal for the away side.
  • 2'
    Assist Georgios Samaras
  • 2'
    Goal Kris Commons
GOAL!!!!! And it's 1-0 Celtic!!!!! Georgios Samaras crosses in from the left, and Kris Commons is unmarked at the back post to lash home a superb volley. What a start for the away side!
  • 1'
We're off, and it's Helsingborgs who get the first half going.
  • The players are on the pitch, the music is playing, we're almost ready to start. The anticipation is building.
  • I interviewed Chris Sutton once, alongside my very good friend and colleague Matt Scrafton. He was a really nice guy. Five minutes until kick-off. I'm filling time. Is it obvious?
  • Chris Sutton on STV thinks it's going to be a cagey affair, and that Celtic will be happy to come home with a draw, possibly an away goal. Before we all get carried away, remember that the Swedes haven't lost at home in "about two years" according to Sutton.
  • There's about ten minutes until kick-off at Helsingborgs' Olympia Stadium. I don't know about you, I've rather missed the Champions League theme music.
  • Meanwhile, here’s Celtic’s starting side: Forster; Matthews, Rogne, Mulgrew, Izaguirre; Commons, Brown, Kayal, Ledley, Samaras; Hooper. Subs: Zaluska (GK) Wilson, Lustig, Chalmers, McCourt, Forrest, Watt.
  • The teams are in, so let’s see what Helsingborgs are working with tonight - Hansson; Wahlstedt, Atta, Sadiku, Uronen; Bedoya, Mahlangu, Gashi, C Andersson; Djurdjic, Sorum. Subs: D. Anderson (GK) Edman, Baffo, Nordmark, Bouaouzan, Accam, Alvaro.
  • Meanwhile, Celtic’s season is just underway. They’ve played two games in the Scottish Premier League, taking a win and a draw from those games. They’re struggling a bit with injuries at the moment, but manager Neil Lennon was confident beforehand that various players would be fit for tonight’s clash.
  • Helsingborg won the Swedish Allsvenskan last season, but as we speak are in fifth place in the table after 19 games, outside of all the places for next season’s European competitions. It’s confusing, as the Swedish season runs from March until November, but try and stay with me.
  • Both teams are in the Champions section of this round of the competition, and the winner will progress to the group stage draw, to be held in Monaco on August 30th.
  • Good evening, and welcome to’s LIVE! text commentary on this Champions League play-off round first leg between Helsingborgs and Celtic. I’m Chris Teale, and it’s my pleasure to be guiding you through this one.
