Goal.com was on hand to cast a judgmental eye over this evening's Serie A proceedings, as an inspired Riccardo Montolivo continues Milan's push for second

Christian Puggioni Flop of the Match

Had a nightmare facing Balotelli's free-kick, parrying one of the striker's deliveries back across his six-yard box to give Montolivo the opportunity to score the opener.

  • Dario Dainelli

    Dario Dainelli

Struggled to deal with the pace and strength of Balotelli throughout, which was eventually illustrated by his two yellow cards resulting in a second-half dismissal.

  • Marco Andreolli

    Marco Andreolli

Also couldn't deal with Balotelli, but was on hand to hook away a few dangerous Milan crosses. Unfortunate not to turn home a looping long-range free-kick, which eventually found its way into the gloves of Abbiati.

  • Bostjan Cesar

    2.50

    Bostjan Cesar

Employed some questionable tactics to stop Balotelli from playing at his best in the first half, including an off-the-ball shove. In the second half, this also continued, with the Slovenian picking up a yellow card for a cynical blocking off.

  • Nicolas Sebastien Frey

    2.50

    Nicolas Sebastien Frey

Struggled to make an impact in the first half, but offered plenty of width in the second, almost setting up Thereau with a clever channel ball. Unfortunate to leave the field injured.

  • Boukary Dramé

    1
    3.50

    Boukary Dramé

Drove powerfully through midfield at times which Abate really struggled to deal with. Was determined to see the game through until the end despite picking up a painful arm injury and battled on regardless.

  • Roberto Guana

    2
    2.50

    Roberto Guana

Made a couple of decent challenges in the first half, but suffered an injury whilst tackling Abate in first-half injury time and was forced off as a result.

  • Isaac Cofie

    2
    2.50

    Isaac Cofie

Was bright, pacey and powerful despite a lengthy trip away during the international break. Looked useful in the first half but faded a little bit in the second, however.

  • Luca Rigoni

    3.50

    Luca Rigoni

Lead by example for the hosts, using his experience and technical ability to really hold his own in the centre of midfield. Gave the ball away a few times unnecessarily in the second half, but was generally a good hub for his side.

  • Alberto Paloschi
    1
    1
    2.50

    Alberto Paloschi

Was unfortunate not to see one of Abbiati's spills head in his direction to stab home. Worked hard and ensured that he was in the right areas, but was never presented with good service.

  • Cyril Thereau
    2
    1
    3.00

    Cyril Thereau

Was bright and creative with the ball at his feet, putting in some reasonable crosses and creating some chances with his neat footwork. His quality of ball lacked at times, but he was one of Chievo's greatest threats.

Substitutions

  • Luciano

    3.00

    Luciano

Made a bit of an impact after coming on, using his technical ability to ghost past a few defenders at times. Also worked hard defensively, tracking back to dispossess El Shaarawy a couple of times.

  • Sergio Pellissier
    0
    2

    Sergio Pellissier

Had one chance of note after being picked out at the back post by Thereau, but failed to turn it towards goal. Aside from this, he didn't see too much of the ball.

  • Adrian Stoian

    1
    2.00

    Adrian Stoian

Failed to make a big difference to the centre of midfield, as Muntari and Montolivo proved to be more than competent adversaries for the substitute.

  • Christian Abbiati
    11
    0
    3.50

    Christian Abbiati

His handling was questionable in the first half, as he spilled two seemingly tame crosses from Thereau, which almost allowed the lurking Paloschi the opportunity to score. Made one fantastic save to deny Luciano.

  • Mattia De Sciglio
    16

    3.50

    Mattia De Sciglio

Composed and solid performance from the youngster, who wasn't beaten down Milan's left and yet again showed why he is so highly regarded.

  • Philippe Mexes

    1
    3.00

    Philippe Mexes

Made a couple of cynical fouls, but was generally quite solid. Dominated aerially over Paloschi and wasn't called into question too much when the ball was on the floor.

  • Ignazio Abate
    10
    1
    3.00

    Ignazio Abate

Had a bright start to the game, but faded a little bit offensively as the match progressed. Drame caused a few problems for the right-back with his strength, but generally Abate offered good width for the visitors.

  • Daniele Bonera
    5
    5
    3.00

    Daniele Bonera

Did what was asked of him and covered well to shepherd the ball out of play whenever a Chievo long ball went astray.

  • Sulley Muntari
    10
    2
    3.00

    Sulley Muntari

Was a powerful and calm distributor in the centre of midfield, spraying the ball wide in what was a good demonstration of the distributional talents. Battled well.

  • Riccardo Montolivo
    24

    4.00

Riccardo Montolivo Top of the Match

Was the quickest to react to Puggioni's mistake to pounce from six yards out for the opener. Battled well throughout, acting as the impetus for Milan counter-attacks, releasing his team-mates with some brilliant passes.

  • Massimo Ambrosini
    12
    1
    3.50

    Massimo Ambrosini

Battled well and shielded his defence, demonstrating that experience can outweigh pace. Was unfortunate not to score after receiving a ball in space at the edge of the Chievo area, but Puggioni was quick off his line.

  • Robinho
    5
    9
    2.00

    Robinho

Not the Brazilian's best game. Didn't look entirely comfortable with his deployment in the centre of the park, and was found out to be weak by the physical presence of the Chievo midfield. Squandered a good chance in the second half.

  • Mario Balotelli
    23
    0
    3.50

    Mario Balotelli

His free-kicks were a constant threat for his side, as Puggioni looked positively shell-shocked whenever he had to face one. Was a great lone striker, driving forward at every opportunity and winning plenty of free-kicks in the process.

  • Stephan El Shaarawy
    24
    2
    3.50

    Stephan El Shaarawy

Had a quiet first half, but played fantastically in the second. His pace cutting in from the left side was a threat which Chievo failed to deal with. Unlucky not to pick up an assist.
