Wolfsburg 1-2 Bayern Munich: Mandzukic scores against his old club as Heynckes' men continue pre-season preparations

The Bavarians picked up the second win of their tour of China against Felix Magath's side, who looked dangerous for large periods of the match but squandered a number of chances

By Enis Koylu

Bayern Munich stepped up their pre-season preparations with a routine 2-1 win over fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in Guangzhou, China.

Felix Magath's side started the game well, but found themselves behind when Mario Mandzukic gave his new side the lead from the spot, before Arjen Robben handed the Bavarians a commanding half-time advantage. Vaclav Pilar pulled one back for VfL, but it was too little, too late.

It may have been a pre-season friendly, but both teams came out with a clear intent to win from the off. Just over a minute had been played when Patrick Helmes was released down the right and crossed to Ivica Olic at the far post.

The Croatian headed the ball into the ground and had beaten Manuel Neuer, but Daniel Van Buyten was on hand to hook the ball off the line and stop Olic from scoring against his former club.

Helmes was looking lively, and a few minutes later he played a neat one-two on the edge of the box and aimed a shot towards the near post, but miscued his effort, allowing Neuer to gather the loose ball with ease.

Gradually, however, Bayern began to find their feet in the game. After Fagner had felled Franck Ribery on the left wing, Toni Kroos brilliantly found the unmarked Van Buyten, who forced a great save from Marwin Hitz.

Minutes later, Thomas Muller chipped a beautiful cross into Robben. The Dutchman was caught under the ball a little, but still managed to loop a header onto the top of the net.

Mandzukic then raced down the right and pulled the ball across the face of goal to Muller, but it was played slightly too far ahead of the Germany attacker. However, as he gathered the ball on the edge of the box, he fell victim to a clumsy tackle from Emanuel Pogatetz, but the referee waved away his claims for a penalty.

Minutes later, however, the referee did point to the spot. Muller moved forward into the box, but was soon sandwiched by Fagner and Makoto Hasebe. Mandzukic stepped up, and squeezed the ball past Hitz.

At the other end, Helmes was still a threat. The former Bayer Leverkusen man released Marcel Schafer down the left, allowing the full-back to pull the ball back to Hasebe, but Neuer was there to make the save.

Any chance Wolfsburg had of turning the game on its head received a fatal blow just before half-time, however. Ribery squeezed the ball between two defenders, and Robben seized possession, bore down on goal, and dinked an exquisite chip over Hitz's head.

Half-time brought a lot of changes with it, and both sides struggled to settle into a rhythm after the break. Naldo came close with a trademark free kick, before Neuer was called into action to stop Luiz Gustavo from slicing the ball into his own goal as he looked to intercept a Yohandry Orozco through-ball.

Srdan Lakic became the next player to come close to pulling one back for Felix Magath's side with a rasping drive from 18 yards that was acrobatically parried away by the former Schalke keeper.

Lakic and Ashkan Dejagah combined well soon after, but as the Iranian began to pull the trigger, Neuer came off his line and narrowed the angle effectively.

Eventually, though, the Wolfsburg assault on the Bayern goal died down, and the Bavarians began to take steady control of possession, even if they were lacking the same intensity that they had in the first half.

And their dominance was soon converted into clear-cut chances. Claudio Pizarro prodded through to Mario Gomez, who tried to take the ball around Hitz but dribbled it out of play after losing his footing.

The Peruvian then took aim 25 yards from goal, but it was directed straight at the Swiss shot stopper, before Gomez was denied by the crossbar from a matter of yards.

Van Buyten then met a Xherdan Shaqiri corner at the near post, but directed his header over, before Wolfsburg finally got one back.

Diego, who has been linked with a move away from the Volkswagen Arena throughout the summer, played a sweet pass to Dejagah, who gave Pilar a tap-in. In truth, Bayern had already done enough to secure victory.

Bayern's next pre-season friendly is against another Bundesliga outfit, Hamburg, on August 4.
