Did not have a save to make in the first half but he did well to turn a low drive from Ronaldo around the post 15 minutes after the restart and repeated the trick not long after. Denied Callejon with another fine stop and deserved the little bit of luck that came with Benzema firing the rebound wide.

  • Allan Nyom

    Allan Nyom

A fine performance from the Cameroonian, who used his power and pace to great effect, both defensively and offensively. Indeed, he was always willing to get forward in support of Torje, thus making life very uncomfortable for Coentrao.

    Mainz

Showed impressive strength throughout, muscling both Higuain and Ronaldo off the ball at separate junctures, while he was always the first to close down Madrid's most dangerous attacking player. Also threatened at set pieces down the other end.

  • Guilherme Siqueira

    Guilherme Siqueira

Not as eye-catching as his defensive colleagues but did not put a foot wrong at the back for Granada, keeping Di Maria very quiet while at the same time doing his utmost to drive forward whenever he could.

  • Íñigo López

    Íñigo López

Given an incredibly harsh yellow card for handball in the first half, even though the ball had actually touched his thigh but he didn't let that adversely affect his aggression in the middle of the park.

  • Mikel Rico

    Mikel Rico

Sometimes let his enthusiasm get the better of him, giving away a free on the edge of his own area for lunging in on Khedira, but his energy played an absolutely vital role in a terrific Granada performance.

  • Gabriel Torje

    3.50

    Gabriel Torje

Teamed up wonderfully well with Nyom, completely nullifying Madrid's attacking threat down the left-hand side, while at the same time piling the pressure on Coentrao, whom he ran directly at repeatedly.

  • Recio

    Recio

Lucky to avoid a booking for cynically hauling back Modric as the Croatian played the ball through for Higuain but it was he who put Ronaldo under pressure as he tried to head Nolito's corner clear.

  • Carlos Aranda

    Carlos Aranda

Earned the corner that Cristiano Ronaldo put through his own net with the most inviting and delicately weighted cross to the far post, after springing Madrid's offside trap.

  • Ighalo

    3.00

    Ighalo

Was expertly dispossessed by Varane early on but gained revenge later on by outfoxing the Frenchman only to slice his subsequent strike on goal wide. Fed off scraps from start to finish but never once let his head drop.

  • Nolito

    Nolito

It was his wonderful inswinging delivery that Ronaldo couldn't help but head past his own goalkeeper. Didn't see as much of the ball as he would have liked thereafter but his passing was good.

The new arrival from Malaga only saw 15 minutes of action at the death.

Only afforded a couple of minutes right at the end.

Came on for Nolito in the final few seconds.

  • Diego López Rodríguez

    Diego López Rodríguez

Handed a recall because of an injury to Casillas, and, in truth, he was given very little to do other than pick the ball out of the back of the net after being understandably caught cold by Ronaldo's botched clearance.

  • Raphaël Varane
    24
    11
    3.00

    Raphaël Varane

Picked up where he left off at the Santiago Bernabeu in midweek, making a wonderful tackle on Ighalo 19 minutes in. He was left flatfooted by the same player later in the half and was lucky to see the Nigerian fire wide, but other than that, he was again the model of composure.

  • Sergio Ramos

    Sergio Ramos

As per usual, the Spain international was a reliable presence at the back for los Blancos, using the ball well enough, while at the same time coping comfortably with everything Malaga threw at him.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    15

    Fabio Coentrao

There can be no doubt that Granada targeted the Portuguese, who was given a rough ride by Nyom and Torje. In his defence, he could have done with a bit more support.

  • Arbeloa
    5
    17
    3.00

    Arbeloa

On hand to clear Aranda's awkward cross 21 minutes in but then, it was he who had played the winger on in the first place and that mistake ultimately led to the opener. The former Liverpool man was later lucky to avoid giving away a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Ighalo.

  • Sami Khedira
    7
    15
    3.00

    Sami Khedira

Was not his usual dominant self in the battle for midfield supremacy but he did pick out the odd nice pass, so his early withdrawal raised a few eyebrows.

  • Xabi Alonso
    12
    20
    2.00

    Xabi Alonso

A dreadful back pass left his goalkeeper scrambling but he was always on hand to help out at the back. Still, he saw an awful lot of possession and did not do nearly enough with it.

  • Luka Modric
    8
    13
    3.00

    Luka Modric

Showed flashes of what he could do with some incisive runs and had a penalty shout at one point in the first half. However, he was perhaps lucky to stay on the field after handling just seconds after being booked for a foul on Rico.

  • Ángel Di María
    7
    19
    3.00

    Ángel Di María

Very sloppy in possession in the first half and also guilty of taking on players in the wrong areas. To be fair to him, stepped up his work-rate after the restart, getting back to help out Arbeloa.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    41

Cristiano Ronaldo Flop of the Match

Gifted Granada the lead by heading a corner from Nolito past Diego Lopez, thus registering the first own goal of his professional career. Was wayward with a couple of long-range frees, while even his normally flawless first touch was a tad heavy at times. A rare off day.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    7
    20
    2.50

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Selected ahead of Benzema but struggled to deal with the physicality of Granada's back four and it was no surprise that he was hauled ashore at half-time after a woefully ineffective display.

Substitutions

  • Marcelo
    9
    12
    2.50

    Marcelo

Came on for Coentrao 20 minutes into the second half but looked too keen to make his presence felt, the Brazilian picking up a needless booking for chopping down Torje.

  • Karim Benzema
    5
    15
    2.50

    Karim Benzema

Took over up top from Higuain at half-time and blew his chance to salvage a point for Madrid, firing wide from close range after the ball had fallen invitingly at his feet.

  • José Callejón
    7
    11
    2.50

    José Callejón

Came on in place of Khedira during the break and his rampaging run should have led to Benzema levelling matters.
