  The Croatia international was the hub of a number of decent moves, and linked well with Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo, particularly in the first half. A rash challenge on Angel Di Maria resulted in a booking for the midfielder as tempers flared throughout the match. He was replaced on the hour mark by Manu del Moral.
