Fortuna Dusseldorf 1-2 Borussia Dortmund: Sahin inspires Schwarzgelben's second-string to victory

Nuri Sahin made the most of his chance to shine, as Jurgen Klopp fieled an understrength side at the Esprit Arena, scoring one goal and creating another, for Jakub Blaszczykowski

1. Bundesliga: Sahin scores against Fortuna

Borussia Dortmund warmed up for their Champions League semi-final, second-leg against Real Madrid with a laboured 2-1 Bundesliga success over Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday evening.

Nuri Sahin was the star of the show for die Schwarzgelben, opening the scoring with a stunning strike from distance before laying on the second for substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski.

Adam Bodzek set up a frantic finale with his late header but Dortmund held on to maintain their winning run ahead of Tuesday's trip to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Jurgen Klopp predictably rested nearly all of his star men for the trip to the Esprit Arena, with Mats Hummels the only player included likely to retain his place in the starting line-up for the midweek trip to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Hardly surprising, then, that the hosts made the brighter start, with Dani Schahin particularly prominent during the opening exchanges. However, after weathering the early storm, Dortmund suddenly sparked into life 18 minutes when Julian Schieber chested against the base of the post, after great work from Hummels.

Just over 60 seconds later, Dortmund were ahead, Moritz Leitner laying the ball off for Sahin, who found the back of the net from all of 30 yards out with a sizzling strike that Fabian Giefer found too hot to handle.

The goal changed the whole complection of the game, but while die Schwarzgelben dominated the remainder of the half, they were unable to add to their tally, the significance of Robert Lewandowski's absence painfully underlined by their failure to register a single shot on goal between the 20th minute and the interval.

Buoyed by the fact that they were still in the game, struggling Dusseldorf began the second period in much the same manner as they had the first, and Ken Ilso was unlucky to see Sebastian Kehl get a crucial nick on a goal-bound effort just after the restart that deflected the ball wide of the Dortmund goal.

Axel Bellinghausen then went close to exploiting some uncertainty at the heart of the visitors' defence only to see his 65th-minute shot roll agonisingly wide. It was a crucial miss as Klopp responded to that lucky escape by sending on two of his big guns, Lewandowski and Blaszczykowski, the changes reaped immediately reaped dividends.

Rather surprisingly, it was Blaszczykowski who made the game safe for Dortmund, the winger coolly slotting home after being slipped in on goal by the impressive Sahin.

Infuriatingly for Dusseldorf, the Pole had been offside and the hosts' sense of injustice only intensified moments later when Hummels escaped with a clear handball in the area after throwing out an arm to block a drive from Stefan Reisinger.

The Bundesliga strugglers did eventually drag themselves back into the game when Bodzek nodded home with two minutes remaining but they were denied what arguably would have been a deserved point when Mitchell Langerak produced a stunning stop to keep out Martin Latka's last-gasp header, meaning they remain in danger of the drop.
