The keeper was let down by his defence as Schmid opened the scoring in the first half but had relatively little to do thereafter. He dealt with the majority of crosses into the box and was not too hasty in coming off his line.

  • Neven Subotic

    Neven Subotic

His positioning was poor for the first goal and he afforded Kruse far too much time and space to set up Schmid. The second half was a different story though, as he and Santana let absolutely nothing past them.

  • Lukasz Piszczek

    Lukasz Piszczek

A typically positive performance from the Polish full-back. He attacked willingly and combined well with his compatriot, Kuba. He rarely let anything past him at the back and added some vital width down the right.

  • Felipe Santana

    Felipe Santana

Was fortunate not to have gifted Freiburg and early goal as his inability to step up let Terrazzino in. He did not look in tune with his team-mates in defence but improved in the second half as him team became comfortable.

  • Marcel Schmelzer

    Marcel Schmelzer

The left-back started fairly slowly and failed to track the run of Schmid as he put Freiburg ahead. However, as the game continued he became more adventurous and put a few decent crosses into the area.

  • Ilkay Gündogan

    Ilkay Gündogan

Struggled to get a grip on the game early on as he found it difficult to get on the ball and link the play for his team-mates. However, he found his range of passing and began to impose himself on the game in the second half.

  • Mario Götze

    Mario Götze

The Germany international was the go-to man whenever Dortmund moved the ball forward. He used it well, linking the play across the front line to often devastating effect. His creativity was influential to the win.

  • Marco Reus

    Marco Reus

A fairly bitty game for the former Borussia Monchengladbach man as he shone in parts, but quickly faded. He had a couple of great chances to find the net, but Baumann got the better of him both times.

  • Jakub Blaszczykowski

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

Some quality football from the winger brought about some of his team's best moments. A quality run created the chance for Sahin to fire in BVB's second, but his best moments were few and far between.

  • Nuri Sahin

Nuri Sahin Top of the Match

Had a difficult start to the game as he found himself closed quickly and bullied in midfield. However, he fought back with aplomb to become the hub of the hosts. His free kick was headed home by Lewandowski and he went on to net himself two impressive goals.

  • Robert Lewandowski

    Robert Lewandowski

Managed to find the back of the net twice in the first half despite a lack of service for much of it. His finishing was spot on and he also did brilliantly to set up Bittencourt for the fifth.

Came on for Kuba in the 76th minute but did not have time to influence the game.

    Leonardo Bittencourt

Replaced Gotze in the 77th minute and managed to bag himself a goal within two minutes of being on the field.

  • Julian Schieber

    Julian Schieber

Brought on for Reus after 81 minutes but could not make his mark on the game.

  • Oliver Baumann

    Oliver Baumann

The keeper had a quiet start to the game other than an unorthodox stop from a Gotze volley early on. There was not a lot he could do as Dortmund rallied and bagged three goals in five minutes before half-time.

  • Pavel Krmas

    Pavel Krmas

The towering Czech was relatively solid for his team, despite the five goals conceded. He put in some impressive, strong tackles but at times left too much space in the channels which BVB exploited.

  • Oliver Sorg

    3
    3.00

    Oliver Sorg

Coped fairly well up against the combination of Schmelzer and Reus during the first half and ensured that it remained a source of limited danger. However, he could perhaps have come across to help add numbers to the middle at times.

  • Matthias Ginter
    2
    3
    3.00

    Matthias Ginter

Was impressive aerially inside the area as Dortmund had very little joy from crosses into the box. He marked the opposition forwards tightly and must have been dismayed at the rush of goals before the break.

  • Christian Günter
    3
    5
    2.50

    Christian Günter

After a positive beginning, the full-back had a nightmare shortly before the break. He lost Lewandowski for the opener and then allowed Kuba the freedom of the left to set up the second. Then, his weak clearance fell straight to Lewandowski who smashed in the third.

  • Jonathan Schmid
    3
    3
    3.50

    Jonathan Schmid

Pressed the Dortmund defence hard from the start and forced a number of errors. He made a great run to get on the end of Kruse's cross for the opener and continued to work his socks off for his team.

  • Johannes Flum
    2
    5
    3.00

    Johannes Flum

Looked very committed as he hassled the BVB midfielders early on. He should have hit the target with a 10th-minute effort but could not match that energy in the second half.

  • Marco Terrazzino
    1
    8
    2.00

Marco Terrazzino Flop of the Match

Failed to make the most of a fantastic opportunity to put his side ahead after just six minutes. It would prove to be his only chance to find the back of the net as he was unable to get involved for the rest of the game.

  • Julian Schuster
    1
    4
    2.50

    Julian Schuster

A good ball into the box was key to his team's opening goal but he could provide little else of note. He failed to track the runs through the middle of the park and looked particularly laboured in the second half.

  • Daniel Caligiuri
    3
    3
    3.50

    Daniel Caligiuri

A hard-working performance from the wide midfielder. He never stopped running, getting forward to try and keep Piszczek back but also helping out his team defensively by chasing down the play.

  • Max Kruse
    2
    4
    3.00

    Max Kruse

Started brightly, worrying the Dortmund defence and putting a shot at an open goal over the bar. He held the ball well before setting up Schmid for the first goal but did not link up well enough with Terrazzino.

Substitutions

  • Fallou Diagne
    2
    4
    3.00

    Fallou Diagne

Replaced Schuster in the 71st minute and added a bit more steel to the Freiburg side. However, he allowed Lewandowski to drift past him easily and set up BVB's fifth goal.

  • Mensur Mujdza

    4

    Mensur Mujdza

Came on for Sorg in the 79th minute but could not impact upon the game.

  • Karim Guédé

Sent on in place of Caligiuri in the 81st minute.
