Player Ratings: Freiburg 0-2 Borussia Dortmund

Goal.com rates the players on show at the Mage Solar Stadion as the reigning Bundesliga champions secure three much-needed points with goals from Neven Subotic and Mario Gotze

    Oliver Baumann

The keeper had relatively little to do throughout the 90 minutes. He failed to read the flight of the ball as Subotic scored the first and could possibly have positioned himself better for the second.

  • Fallou Diagne

    Fallou Diagne

The centre-back never quite seemed up to speed whenever Dortmund scraped together an attack. Put in a brilliant last-ditch challenge on Lewandowski early in the second half but should have scored in the 32nd minute with a free header.

  • Mensur Mujdza
    8
    4
    2.50

    Mensur Mujdza

Coped well in the face of a potentially fierce combination of Reus and Piszczek. He did not allow the Pole enough space to whip in a cross and regularly picked holes in his defensive game with some great passes down the channels.

  • Matthias Ginter

Matthias Ginter Flop of the Match

Got himself a booking for a rash early challenge and was walking on eggshells from then on. He was far too weak at the back and failed to close play quickly enough in an error-ridden afternoon.

  • Cedrick Makiadi
    3
    2
    2.50

    Cedrick Makiadi

Performed well in midfield and did not let much past him throughout. He policed the park well enough but was guilty of making a number of poor passes to the forwards.

  • Jonathan Schmid
    1
    3
    2.50

    Jonathan Schmid

Spent much of his time camped back as he feared affording BVB space in which to counter. Nevertheless, he kept Grosskreutz at bay for almost the entire match, though more of an attacking threat was required.

  • Julian Schuster
    1
    3
    2.50

    Julian Schuster

Provided the drive from midfield, though not frequently enough. A single run in the first half created a great opportunity but no team-mate was on hand to finish. He limited the effect of Gundogan.

  • Karim Guédé
    4
    3
    2.50

    Karim Guédé

Was very eager to get on the ball and linked the play between midfield and attack effectively. He used his powerful frame to hold up the ball well but did not get in enough areas to test Weidenfeller.

  • Daniel Caligiuri
    0
    3
    2.50

    Daniel Caligiuri

Proved lively from the off as he never looked afraid to run at the Dortmund defenders. Almost created an early goal for his side as Piszczek hit his own post from his cross, but he faded into the background after the break.

  • Max Kruse
    2
    2
    2.00

    Max Kruse

It was a disappointing afternoon for the forward, who offered very little to his side. Never seemed to pick the right option and was left frustrated by a lack of time on the ball. He did not test Weidenfeller at all.

  • Erik Jendrisek
    2
    4
    2.00

    Erik Jendrisek

Was rarely involved in the action during the first half as he struggled to get on the ball. He should well have grabbed an equaliser for his side moments after Dortmund went ahead and was substituted on the hour mark.

    Vegar Eggen Hedenstad

Replaced Jendrisek on 60 minutes but failed to add any solidity to Freiburg. The scrappy game perhaps suited him, but Dortmund ultimately put the points beyond them.

  • Johannes Flum
    1
    2

    Johannes Flum

Came on for Schuster in the 86th minute and could not influence proceedings.

  • Marco Terrazzino
    1
    2
    2.00

    Marco Terrazzino

Was given 20 minutes in place of Karim Guede but contributed very little to the attack. His link-up play was poor and he barely saw the ball.

  • Roman Weidenfeller
    15
    3
    2.50

    Roman Weidenfeller

Did not have a great deal to do, but showed great judgement when coming off his line, thwarting Kruse in the first half and making a magnificent stop from Jendrisek soon after the restart.

  • Neven Subotic
    39
    10
    3.50

Neven Subotic Top of the Match

Came under more pressure than he would have expected in the opening period and the poor conditions made it all the more difficult. Nevertheless, he stayed strong in the challenge, composed in possession, and bagged himself a goal.

  • Mats Hummels
    20
    4
    2.50

    Mats Hummels

Found the conditions difficult as he misplaced a few too many simple passes. He found it hard to carry out the basics, allowing too much space to the Freiburg players from set pieces.

  • Lukasz Piszczek
    19
    4
    2.50

    Lukasz Piszczek

Not quite the dynamic performance that has come to be expected of the Polish full-back. Almost diverted a cross into his own net in the first half and, although he was not his adventurous self, he allowed too much space in the channels.

  • Marcel Schmelzer
    16
    2
    2.50

    Marcel Schmelzer

As Freiburg concentrated the majority of their attacks down their left, Schmelzer was left with a relatively simple job. He did not push on to great effect but he supplied some high quality deliveries.

  • Sebastian Kehl
    14
    2
    2.50

    Sebastian Kehl

Did not enjoy the run of the midfield as he came up against a strong counterpart in Makiadi. It meant that his team were unable to dominate the game as they really should have and caused the forwards to be isolated.

  • Ilkay Gündogan
    14
    7
    2.50

    Ilkay Gündogan

Never really supplied the link between defence and attack, possibly down to the slow nature of the pitch. He was not allowed the freedom in the middle to pull the strings in what was a fairly disappointing outing.

  • Mario Götze
    34
    11
    3.00

    Mario Götze

Struggled to really get involved in the first half as Dortmund were unable to get the ball moving well in the final third. He blazed a great chance over after the restart but won some important free kicks and scored with a calm 83rd-minute finish.

  • Marco Reus
    31
    7
    3.00

    Marco Reus

The conditions made it difficult for Reus to glide with the ball as he usually does and therefore limited his impact. A good free kick warmed the hands of Baumann before another one was headed in by Subotic in a vastly improved second half.

  • Kevin Großkreutz
    11
    13
    2.50

    Kevin Großkreutz

Once again the winger was quiet for the majority of the match. He provided one bright moment in which he created a chance for Gotze, but the 20-year-old could not finish. BVB fans will be counting the days until Kuba returns.

  • Robert Lewandowski
    36
    3
    2.50

    Robert Lewandowski

Not a particularly clinical performance from the Poland international as he never really threatened in behind the defence. Grabbed an assist at the end but was not as threatening as against Real Madrid in midweek.

Substitutions

  • Moritz Leitner
    14
    5

    Moritz Leitner

Brought on in place of Grosskreutz deep in second-half stoppage time.

  • Ivan Perisic
    19
    9

    Ivan Perisic

Came on for Gotze in the 90th minute and could not impact on the game.

  • Julian Schieber
    13
    8

    Julian Schieber

Replaced Reus in the 81st minute and fired wide from his one and only chance.
