Player Ratings: West Ham 4-2 Reading

Nigel Adkins' men battled back from two goals down after the break to level the score but Kevin Nolan added a double to his first-half strike to complete his hat-trick

    Jussi Jaaskelainen

Saved a goal-bound header from Pogrebnyak in the early stages but had little else to do in the first half. After the break it was a different story as McCleary's effort from outside the box outfoxed the 38-year-old, but the Finn could do little to prevent Le Fondre's leveller.

  • Winston Reid

    Winston Reid

After being awarded West Ham's 'Hammer of the Year' earlier in the week, the 24-year-old put in another solid performance alongside Collins in the first half. West Ham were thrown into disarray after the break, though, and Reid offered little to settle the panic spread among the defence.

    Joey O'Brien

Caused a threat on the left flank for West Ham but he constantly allowed Gunter space in behind and the Reading right-back took advantage.

  • James Collins

    James Collins

Won every duel with Pogrebnyak in the air and had a very comfortable afternoon up until the break. In the second half, Collins was comfortably beaten for pace by Blackman which led to Le Fondre's equaliser.

  • Guy Demel

    Guy Demel

Often resorted to hopeful balls from the back and his clearances under pressure were wild.

  • Kevin Nolan

Kevin Nolan Top of the Match

The midfielder was gifted his goal after McCarthy's blunder but still showed composure to round the Reading goalkeeper to finish. Looked as unlikely as any West Ham player to score a third but after being played through by Noble, but he took his one-on-one chance neatly. Also showed excellent awareness in the box to meet Maiga's cross to complete his hat-trick.

  • Mark Noble

    Mark Noble

Kept West Ham ticking over with his passing in midfield and often dropped deep to pick the ball up from the back.

    Mohamed Diame

Showed tremendous energy in the middle for West Ham but when he needed to step up another level in the second half to inspire the hosts' attack, he failed to rise to the occasion.

  • Joe Cole

    Joe Cole

Saw a lot of the ball in the first half but lacked the cutting edge to really cause a problem for Reading's defence and was eventually subbed.

  • Andy Carroll

    Andy Carroll

Looked sluggish and off the pace of the game in the first half until he brought down a high ball pumped into the box and teed up Vaz Te for West Ham's second. After the break, the on-loan striker continued to his efforts to influence the game but he was never presented with a clear-cut chance. Greeted at the end with chants from the West Ham fans pleading 'we want you to stay'.

  • Ricardo Vaz Te

    Ricardo Vaz Te

Frustrated at times as his passing lacked precision but his low drive past McCarthy for West Ham's second was very well taken and the winger could have added another to his tally if his strike hadn't hit the crossbar.

Came on late but his fine cross was met by Nolan who completed his hat-trick.

  • Alex McCarthy

    Alex McCarthy

Didn't have the greatest game to mark his England call-up. McCarthy was at fault for West Ham's opener after smashing his clearance against Carroll which allowed Nolan to strike. Made a solid save from midfielder shortly after and could do little about Vaz Te's strike, or Nolan's second-half double.

  • Chris Gunter

    2.50

    Chris Gunter

His intent to get forward created Reading's best opportunity of the first half but his woeful finish inside the box failed to even test Jaaskelainen. Continued to get forward at every opportunity and looked Reading's brightest outlet.

  • Sean Morrison

    Sean Morrison

Handled Carroll well but failed to pick up the lurking Nolan inside Reading's box and was punished for it.

    Stephen Kelly

Looked helpless as he tried to contest a high ball with Carroll only to see the West Ham striker pluck it out of the air to set up Vaz Te's goal. Offered little going forward and struggled to contain the threat down West Ham's right channel.

  • Kaspars Gorkss

    Kaspars Gorkss

Dealt with Carroll with relative ease but like his centre-back partner, he failed to stay alert to keep Nolan at bay.

  • Jem Karacan

    Jem Karacan

Looked assured in his distribution but struggled to offer anything going forward for Reading.

  • Jobi McAnuff

    Jobi McAnuff

Looked comfortable in possession and showed excellent vision to resist pumping the ball into the box when a simpler pass to McCleary set up Reading's first goal. Looked one of Reading's brighter players.

  • Garath McCleary

    Garath McCleary

Anonymous for large parts of the game and was wasteful when in possession but his fine strike from outside of the box handed Reading a way back into the game.

  • Hal Robson-Kanu

    Hal Robson-Kanu

Struggled to have any meaningful impact on the right flank and was subbed at the break.

    Danny Guthrie

Had the best chance of the first half for Reading after a storming run on the right flank presented him with a good chance inside the box but his effort crashed against the side netting.

  • Pavel Pogrebnyak

Pavel Pogrebnyak Flop of the Match

Rose well to meet McAnuff's cross and force a solid save from Jaaskelainen but lacked the instinct to force his way past Reid and Collins thereafter and was subbed at the break.

    Adam Le Fondre

Showed excellent awareness to read Blackman's cross which enabled him to slam home Reading's equaliser.

  • Nick Blackman

    Nick Blackman

Raced clear of Collins to cross for Le Fondre's equaliser. Looked a much brighter player than Robson-Kanu.
