Swansea City 0-3 Fulham: Visitors secure final day spoils

A resilient performance from the Cottagers and a clinical forward line was enough to warrant a three goal victory as they ended a run of five straight league defeats this season

By Tom Davis

Swansea were left ruing missed chances after Fulham's forward line taught them a lesson in finishing in a 3-0 victory for the Cottgers on the final day of the Premier League season.

The end-of-season fixture offered a lively opening ten minutes but it was midway through the first-half when Alexander Kacaniklic opened the scoring for the visitors with his fourth goal of the season.

Two goals late on from Dimitar Berbatov and second-half substitute Urby Emanuelson took their goal tally to three, despite spending much of the second period in their own half.

Michael Laudrup made three changes to the side that was defeated 2-1 at Old Trafford last weekend with Michael Vorm, Angel Rangel and Ben Davies thrust back into defensive duties.

Fulham also travelled with three changes to their starting line-up as Philippe Senderos, John Arne Riise and Emmanuel Frimpong returned to action – the latter making only his third league appearance and his second start since arriving on loan last summer.

The game started brightly with both sides creating chances early on, yet it was Fulham – entering the game off the back of five straight league defeats – who took the lead through Kacaniklic after the midfielder found plenty of space to slot the ball home.

The Sweden international nearly doubled the lead after a fine through-ball from Bryan Ruiz allowed him to test the Swansea goal once more only to see his shot clip the post, whilst Nathan Dyer fizzed a long-range drive inches over the bar just moments later.

Swansea were left frustrated by their opponents’ disciplined first-half performance who had held a deserved lead as they entered the second-half, yet the League Cup winners were offered the chance to level early through Chico who couldn't make a clean connection with the ball when it suddenly fell to him from a corner.

Fulham were on the back-foot and Pablo Hernandez – who was an ever-present feature in the home side’s attacking moves – was denied goals in consecutive attacks when Mark Schwarzer prevailed in a one-on-one opportunity and then saw his curled shot from the edge of the area dip wide of the post.

The home side were now in complete control of the game but were made to pay for the numerous chances squandered in front of goal when Berbatov rounded the keeper and dispatched the second in seemingly clinical fashion.

With just a minute remaining on the clock, Emanuelson was gifted an easy opportunity with a rebounded effort to notch his first goal for the club on his final appearance, in a win that saw the visitors claim their first ever victory against Swansea in the Premier League.
