Player Ratings: Aston Villa 1-2 Chelsea

Frank Lampard breaks Bobby Tambling's goalscoring record for the Blues as Rafael Benitez's side battle back from a goal down to all but secure Champions League football next term

By Sam Lee at Villa Park

  • Bradley Guzan

    Bradley Guzan

Spilled a low Lampard free kick but did well to keep out the follow-up. Could not do much about Lampard's efforts in the second half, mind.

  • Ron Vlaar

    2.50

    Ron Vlaar

Solid at the back in the first half, particularly against Mata's early teasing crosses. Struggled a bit as Chelsea came forward late in the piece.

  • Joseph Bennett

    Joseph Bennett

Some timely interceptions as the home side tried to play the ball inside him.

  • Eric Lichaj

    2.50

    Eric Lichaj

Nearly forced Villa's second when his cross deflected off Cole, and that was following a bustling run down the right, but those occasions were all too rare on the day. Lucky to not be booked for tripping Hazard, but then did well to deny him at the death.

  • Nathan Baker

    Nathan Baker

Booked early on for coming through the back of Mata. Good in the air against Ba in opening exchanges, looked accomplished alongside Vlaar.

  • Ashley Westwood
    8
    7
    3.00

    Ashley Westwood

Tidy performance at the back of the midfield, covering a lot of ground and using the ball well, as he often does. Scrambled well to block Ba's shot on the line (or perhaps not) as Chelsea forced the issue.

  • Fabian Delph
    6
    10
    2.50

    Fabian Delph

Battling performance in the middle and flashed an effort agonisingly close to the top corner just after Villa went a goal up.

  • Yacouba Sylla
    9
    9
    2.50

    Yacouba Sylla

Played in Benteke for the first, and was economical with his passing. Just about blocked Cahill's header on the line to force an incredible scramble.

  • Gabriel Agbonlahor
    8
    9
    2.50

    Gabriel Agbonlahor

Worried the visiting defence with his pace, as he so often does. Offered very little else, though, especially on his left foot.

  • C. Benteke
    35
    11
    3.00

    C. Benteke

Scored a brilliant goal, skinning Cahill and giving Cech the eyes to roll home at the near post. Very lucky not to have been sent off for an elbow on Azpilicueta, but did see red after the break for a high foot on Terry. Had the beating of Chelsea's central defenders all afternoon before that.

  • Andreas Weimann
    10
    8
    2.50

    Andreas Weimann

Has a tendency to drift in and out of games, and the first half was more of an 'out' performance.

Substitutions

  • Petr Cech
    52
    22
    2.50

    Petr Cech

Beaten far too easily for Benteke's opening goal, but had little else to do after that despite the hosts' dominance.

  • Ashley Cole
    56
    12
    2.50

    Ashley Cole

A pretty subdued display from the left-back, who almost turned Lichaj's cross into his own net in the second half.

  • Gary Cahill
    36
    46
    2.50

    Gary Cahill

Was at pains to get in position when faced with Benteke in full flight, only to be skinned all ends up as the Belgian opened the scoring. Looked worried by Agbonlahor's pace, but is not the first and will not be the last.

  • John Terry
    74
    13
    2.50

    John Terry

Could and possibly should have been sent off in the first half for two bookable offences, but the second went unpunished. Roundly booed for his role in getting Benteke sent off, which was getting kicked in the chest. Otherwise, looked slow and worried by the Belgian striker. Went off injured.

  • César Azpilicueta
    48
    27
    2.50

    César Azpilicueta

Got an elbow in the face in what was his biggest contribution to the first half. Did not do too much after the break, either.

  • Ramires
    31
    78
    2.00

    Ramires Flop of the Match

Booked for a cynical foul on Benteke, who had just scored the opener. Got away with a trip on Agbonlahor but was sent off on the stroke of half-time for a high foot. Was playing well other than that, and looked like he might be able to create something from deep.

  • Frank Lampard
    202
    29
    4.00

Frank Lampard Top of the Match

Tested Guzan with a low free kick in the first half, and put in more tackles than telling passes or shots until he drew the sides level with a left-footed strike to equal Bobby Tambling's Chelsea goalscoring record. He then beat the record from close range to all but wrap up Champions League football for the Blues.

  • Victor Moses
    29
    53
    2.50

    Victor Moses

Struggled to influence proceedings down the right, and his attempts to get in behind the defence proved fruitless in the first 45 minutes.

  • Eden Hazard
    132
    25
    3.00

    Eden Hazard

Struggled to make an impact down the left before half-time, but proved the telling influence as he got to the byline to cut back for Lampard to score the winner. Hobbled off in injury time.

  • Juan Mata
    78
    45
    2.50

    Juan Mata

Played several tantalising crosses into the Villa area in the first half an hour but the home defence managed to head them away each time. Did not perform to his usual high standards, which is unsurprising given the amount of games he has played.

  • Demba Ba
    32
    80
    2.50

    Demba Ba

Missed a couple of good chances early on, though he was flagged offside for the first.

Substitutions

  • Branislav Ivanovic
    75
    16
    2.00

    Branislav Ivanovic

Came on for stricken Terry and did a solid job, especially in late, late onslaught.

  • David Luiz
    112
    19
    3.50

    David Luiz

Came on at half-time to sit in front of the defence in place of the departed Ramires. Did a superb job, cutting out numerous through balls and building attacks from deep.

  • Fernando Torres
    134
    14
    2.00

    Fernando Torres

Came on for the wasteful Ba, but did very little.
