Player Ratings: West Brom 1-1 Newcastle

The visitors took a first-half lead through Yoan Gouffran but were unable to see the game home as the terrific Billy Jones grabbed a deserved equaliser for the Baggies

    Ben Foster

Dealt well with everything thrown at him but his attempt to come and claim the ball for the opening goal was poor. Left himself in no man's land.

    Jonas Olsson

Normally so calm and assured, the experienced defender never looked at ease as he was chased down and bullied in the air by Newcastle's powerful frontline, but he grew into the game slowly.

Goran Popov Flop of the Match

A simply woeful performance for a player re-introduced by Steve Clarke. Gave the ball away, defended poorly and was brushed off far too easily at times. His display was typified by a first-half free-kick that sliced out for a throw-in.

  • Gareth McAuley

    Gareth McAuley

A nervy display as he failed to deal with the threats of Cisse, Sissoko and Gouffran up front. Was caught out of position for Gouffran's goal, but more assured after the break.

  • Billy Jones

Billy Jones Top of the Match

Got forward well to support the attacking ranks and dealt well with everything defensively. Something of an unsung hero for the Baggies and his display was topped off with a deserved equaliser.

    Claudio Yacob

Was neat and tidy but defensively unaware of some of the midfield runners from deep. Sacrificed at the break for Long as the hosts went in search of goals.

  • James Morrison

    James Morrison

Over-run in midfield by the impressive Cabaye and Sissoko but stuck to his guns and looked to keep his side ticking over with neat passes. Came close to scoring in the second half as his influence grew.

  • Chris Brunt

    Chris Brunt

His 200th appearance for the club but the skipper never got at Debuchy in the left-wing role and was sometimes sloppy with the ball. Was more effective in the second period as he pulled the strings in midfield.

  • Graham Dorrans

    Graham Dorrans

Worked hard to get his side going but often appeared frustrated from a lack of options and his final ball reflected that.

  • Romelu Lukaku

    3.00

    Romelu Lukaku

Tried his utmost to disrupt the visitors' backline but with little success. Came agonisingly close at the start of the second half when he hit the bar with a header and helped set up the goal.

  • Marc-Antoine Fortune

    Marc-Antoine Fortune

Tried to hold the ball up and bring others into play but his control was sometimes out. Had more luck when he moved out to a right-wing position to accommodate Long's arrival in the second period. Was more effective after the break, helping set up the leveller.

    Shane Long

Was introduced at the interval as the Baggies sought an equaliser and missed a good chance to do so early on. His runs into wide areas caused problems for the Newcastle defence and worked harder than his fellow strikers.

  • Rob Elliot

    Rob Elliot

Had little to do early on but was commanding of his area and those in front of him. A more than able deputy for Tim Krul on this evidence. Had no chance with the goal.

  • Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Commanding presence in the centre of defence, made Lukaku's role as the spearhead of the Baggies' attack a minimal one, both in the air and on the ground.

  • James Perch

    James Perch

In an impressive performance for his side, he was definitely the missing link. Often quite sloppy with his passing and was guilty of failing to track midfield runners.

  • Massadio Haidara

    Massadio Haidara

Was defensively sound but showed little ambition going forward and was caught napping at the back at times, including for the opening goal.

  • Mathieu Debuchy

    Mathieu Debuchy

Got forward well to help Gouffran down the right and was never put under any true pressure by the Baggies.

  • Steven Taylor

    Steven Taylor

Calm in possession and powerful in the air, the centre-back was effective in releasing the ball to the midfielders quickly and helping to keep the Baggies at bay.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

Instrumental in his side's impressive display, with a series of clever passes and always looked for the ball. Never shy to put in a challenge either. It was his defence-splitting pass which helped create the opening goal.

  • Moussa Sissoko

    Moussa Sissoko

Superb performance from the athletic midfielder, who showed impressive awareness off the ball as well as technical and physical qualities on it.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    Jonas Gutierrez

Was largely ineffective, with all the good Magpies build-up play either central or down the right but helped Haidara going backwards when the youngster was under pressure.

  • Papiss Cissé

    Papiss Cissé

Showed great composure to find a searching cross for the opener but was guilty of some heavy touches and poor finishing in the final third.

  • Yoan Gouffran

    Yoan Gouffran

Lovely header for the goal and worked tirelessly up front, putting the Baggies' defence under pressure and never allowing them a minute's peace on the ball.
