Player Ratings: Manchester City 4-0 Newcastle

The champions flexed their muscles as strikes from Carlos Tevez, David Silva, Vincent Kompany and a James Perch own goal sealed a convincing win against the struggling Magpies

Passed the afternoon’s attention test with flying colours, being called into action sporadically throughout the 90 minutes without ever being caught out.

  • Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany Top of the Match

Invoked the wrath of his manager after featuring for Belgium midweek, despite not playing for City since late January. Mancini had no need to worry though, with the centre-half turning in a dominant performance that added an air of authority that the home side’s rearguard has severely missed recently. Bagged himself a goal too.

  • Pablo Zabaleta

    Pablo Zabaleta

Yet another consistent performance that, amongst the host of changes Mancini made at the back, signaled his importance to the side. Always an attacking threat, without ever neglecting his defensive responsibilities.

  • Joleon Lescott

    Joleon Lescott

Benefited from the certainty and familiarity brought out by a reunion with Kompany in the centre of the host’s defence. Cisse’s inability to effect the game in a sustained manner made his job significantly easier.

  • Gael Clichy

    Gael Clichy

Fantastic early cross across the box that allowed Tevez to tap in seemed the catalyst in City transforming from lumbering to purposeful in their attack.

  • Samir Nasri

    Samir Nasri

Most of City’s attacking potency came down Nasri’s side, though this was as much due to Gutierrez’s unfamiliarity as left-back as it was Nasri’s effectiveness. Nevertheless, showed bright glimpses throughout, including an inventive assist for Silva’s effort.

  • Gareth Barry

    Gareth Barry

Blazed over the bar when it seemed that putting the ball in the net would have been infinitely easier in the first half but in part redeemed himself, getting an assist, of sorts, for Kompany’s second-half strike.

  • David Silva

    David Silva

Quite visibly clicked through the gears in the first half, wastefully stealing in from a blatantly offside position to deny Zabaleta the chance to put City in the lead, before rifling in with aplomb just before the interval.

  • Yaya Touré

    Yaya Touré

Newcastle’s physical approach – with Toure returning from illness - seemed to bog the midfielder down in the first half but as the game developed, he started to come into his own, best demonstrated when he smashed through the Newcastle defensive before rifling in to notch his side’s fourth goal.

  • Edin Dzeko

    Edin Dzeko

Was a mobile threat and was unlucky to not to get himself on the scoresheet after working himself into several threatening positions, only to be thwarted by Elliot. Physical presence in the final third was the platform upon which City’s more intricate players could damage the opposition.

  • Carlos Tévez
    19

    Carlos Tévez

His personal scoring record against Newcastle was impressive before the game and even though his opener was put on a plate for him by Clichy, the striker looked a constant menace from the off.

    Javi García

Game was done and dusted by the time he came on, allowing him ample chance to spray a few easy passes around the pitch.

    Scott Sinclair

Given a rare, short runaround at the end and forced Elliot into an immediate stop with a smart curling effort from just outside the box.

    Sergio Agüero

Will be a welcome return for the club and will be glad to get a few minutes tucked under his belt – had no say in the afternoon’s proceedings though.

  • Rob Elliot

    Rob Elliot

Series of smart saves – including a fingertip stop from Dzeko’s close-range effort - kept the hosts at bay in the first half. The second half continued in much the same vein, with Dzeko surely rueing a composed performance from the visitor’s keeper that kept the score borderline-respectable.

    Danny Simpson

It was the right-back’s first run out since the 7-3 drubbing by Arsenal in December, and it showed. General sloppiness saw him concede throw-ins through his own bad touches, while the intricacies of Silva’s movement and technique too often bamboozled him.

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Combination of Dzeko’s directness and Silva and Tevez’s business caused him no end of problems. Probably one of, if not the, most difficult test he has faced since his January switch.

  • Ryan Taylor

    Ryan Taylor

Suffered no end of problems all afternoon, getting turned inside out by Silva quite regularly. Won't treasure the memory of this game.

  • Steven Taylor

    Steven Taylor

At times there seemed little he could do to repel the host’s wave-upon-wave of attacks, with the variety of City’s approaches giving him scant opportunity to settle into a clearly-defined pattern. Will be hoping to forget this afternoon as quickly as possible.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    2.50

    Yohan Cabaye

Talked in the press before the game about how City don’t function as a team yet could perhaps, considering his captaincy, look closer to home after a rather disjointed and dejected group performance. Started the second-half brightly but saw his team’s competitiveness quickly disintegrate.

  • Moussa Sissoko

    Moussa Sissoko

Matched Toure for power and physicality in the centre of the park, yet his game didn’t extend much beyond that.

  • Vurnon Anita

    2.50

    Vurnon Anita

Clipped, far-post pass to Cisse proved his side’s one moment of respite in the first half, though an early yellow card made him reassess his bustling nature in the middle of the park. Took the foot off the gas after the interval as City flexed their muscles.

  • Jonas Gutierrez
    2
    4
    2.00

    Jonas Gutierrez

Hard to criticise when baring in mind that he was thrown in against the reigning champions as an emergency left-back, yet most of City’s attacking threat came down his side.

  • Papiss Cissé
    2
    5
    2.50

    Papiss Cissé

Performance served as a microcosm of his season so far; ineffectual for the most, though capable of delivering the improbable. Hit the post with a well-struck near-post volley in Newcastle’s only real attack of the first half.

  • Yoan Gouffran

    Yoan Gouffran

As with Obertan, was difficult to tell whether or not he actually featured, doing little to effect the game in any positive manner, before being replaced around the hour mark.

    1.50

Gabriel Obertan Flop of the Match

Featuring in just his fourth league start of season, though the anonymity with which he played means that observation will probably be lost of most watching the game. Hauled off at half-time.

Substitutions

  • James Perch
    6
    1
    2.50

    James Perch

Introduced to quell City’s relentless attack and, while it seemed to work initially, Newcastle fell into the same bad habits that characterised their first half and shipped two more goals after the break.

  • Dan Gosling
    5
    1
    3.00

    Dan Gosling

Another functional player brought on to replace a wholly ineffectual winger, though failed to improve his team’s pretty dismal afternoon.
