Player Ratings: Arsenal 0-0 Everton

A superb defensive display from both teams saw a gripping contest finish without any goals at the Emirates Stadium, keeping alive each's hopes of a top-four finish

    Wojciech Szczesny

Did not put a foot wrong in his first appearance after five matches on the bench but had little to do.

  • Bacary Sagna

    Bacary Sagna

Found himself under a lot of physical pressure from Anichebe but coped well, also making his traditional surging runs down the right flank at every opportunity. Was guilty of providing underwhelming service at times, however.

  • Per Mertesacker

    Per Mertesacker

Untroubled for the most part but often found himself outmuscled by the beastly Anichebe. Defended well when called upon, even trying his luck at the other end, though the German's attempts were to no avail.

  • Laurent Koscielny

    Laurent Koscielny

Was not afraid to get stuck in at the back early on and was comfortable in possession. Remained largely untroubled and proved why he is a regular starter under Arsene Wenger.

  • Kieran Gibbs
    22

    3.50

    Kieran Gibbs

A constant threat down the left-hand side but attacked and defended in equal measure. Flashed a shot over after making a good run midway through the first half.

  • Mikel Arteta
    18
    6
    3.00

    Mikel Arteta

Another metronomic display from the Spaniard. The less noticeable that Arteta is, the more effective his passing game invariably becomes. Was guilty of the odd clumsy challenge, though, and booked in the second half.

  • Jack Wilshere
    15

    Jack Wilshere

Went down after 15 minutes but was fine to continue and broke forward at every opportunity thereafter. Taken off after 68 minutes and the England midfielder will probably have to wait until he is fully fit again to dominate the midfield battle as he knows that he can.

  • Aaron Ramsey
    41
    5
    3.50

    Aaron Ramsey

Stepped up to produce a performance superior to what has become expected of the Welshman. Terrific with the ball at his feet, strong in the tackle and dangerous with his crosses. The only criticism was perhaps a lack of consistency in the final ball.

  • Santi Cazorla
    28
    6
    3.00

    Santi Cazorla

Proved a superb attacking presence as ever, spraying a variety of intricate passes to those around him. Advanced into the box when he could but could not provide his side with the crucial goal.

  • Olivier Giroud
    14
    30
    2.00

Olivier Giroud Flop of the Match

Missed a great chance on the stroke of half-time and was overly physical at times, tackling clumsily and barging players in Blue shirts for the sake of it. Did add a bit of French flair but missed a series of shots from good positions.

  • Theo Walcott
    15
    8
    3.00

    Theo Walcott

Even without making a direct impact in the first half, his pace and creativity forced Everton into an endless sequence of fouls and errors. Continued his surging runs after the break and will be happy to have survived over an hour's play unscathed.

Substitutions

    Monreal

Came on as a late substitute in the dying embers.

  • Lukas Podolski

    Lukas Podolski

Came on for Walcott after 68 minutes and worked tirelessly to give his side the advantage, cutting into the danger area from the left flank on a regular basis. Could not provide the killer touch needed, though.

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    22

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Replaced Wilshere on 68 minutes and showed his usual pace and energy.

  • Tim Howard

    3.00

    Tim Howard

Went untested before the break but responded well to Arsenal's rise in tempo upon the resumption. Displayed particular authority when collecting the ball from corners.

  • Leighton Baines
    4

    3.00

    Leighton Baines

Wonderful as usual down the left-hand side but could not project his usual influence in the first half. Excelled at delivering curling set-pieces and crosses, though the England defender could not get a goal or assist to his name in the face of tough opposition.

  • Phil Jagielka
    6
    6
    3.50

    Phil Jagielka

Typically solid both as a stopper and a feeder for those ahead of him. Produced a sensational sliding block to stop Cazorla in the box on the edge of half-time.

  • Sylvain Distin
    7
    4
    4.00

    Sylvain Distin

Headed away cross after cross as well as supplying long passes for the likes of Mirallas and Anichebe. Put all of his nous and experience to good use in shackling Walcott and Giroud.

  • Darron Gibson
    2
    8
    3.00

    Darron Gibson

Was booked on the half-hour mark and almost sent off minutes later. However, on the ball, the Irishman was fantastic, sending in lethal crosses and through balls on numerous occasions.

  • Ross Barkley
    5
    4
    3.50

    Ross Barkley

A strong, creative display from the youngster. Was not afraid to attempt key passes and take shots from distance. Gave the ball away at times but is fast becoming the complete product under David Moyes’s tutelage. Came off after 75 minutes.

  • Steven Pienaar
    3
    5
    2.50

    Steven Pienaar

Missed a gilt-edged chance after six minutes and was booked for a poor challenge on Walcott in the first half. Was otherwise decent, harrying all day long down the left flank.

  • Seamus Coleman

Seamus Coleman Top of the Match

Could often be found raiding down the right-hand side and was visibly afforded extra attention for it by Arsenal defenders. Was not found wanting in terms of the final ball, either, while his defensive work-rate was equally superb.

  • Marouane Fellaini
    11
    4
    3.00

    Marouane Fellaini

Played in a deeper role than usual and fought for every ball with his usual strength and vigour. Won headers in the middle and at the back but also gave the ball away cheaply at times.

  • Kevin Mirallas
    10
    5
    3.50

    Kevin Mirallas

Continued his good form from the off, posing problems for the Arsenal back line with tremendous skill and flair. Was always ready to whip a shot at goal but did produce the occasional loose pass.

  • Victor Anichebe
    1
    8
    3.00

    Victor Anichebe

Displayed tank-like strength throughout but was rough in the tackle and often lost his temper at the officials. Could have given his side the breakthrough on the edge of half-time but was stopped by a crucial sliding tackle.

Substitutions

  • Bryan Oviedo

    Bryan Oviedo

Came on too late to make a difference.

  • Nikica Jelavic

    Nikica Jelavic

Was brought on for Barkley with 15 minutes to go but did not really have enough time to make a game-changing contribution.

  • Steven Naismith

    2
    2.50

    Steven Naismith

Like Oviedo, was an injury-time substitute who did not have enough time to make an impact.
