Player Ratings: Everton 3-1 Reading

After a near-even first half, Marouane Fellaini's goal before the break prompted David Moyes's men to turn on the style, leaving Brian McDermott with serious relegation worries

Making a rare appearance in goal for the Toffees, the Slovakian did not have many tests and made one particuarly notable block from Hunt.

  • Leighton Baines

    Leighton Baines

The textbook Baines game; frequent with his forward thrusts and unerring in his delivery. Combined well with both interchanging wingers and solid in defence.

Picked up an ankle injury within three minutes and was withdrawn, taken to hospital for stitches.

There were appeals against him for a handball penalty though it would have been harsh; otherwise a mostly quiet day's work for the centre-back.

    Darron Gibson

Intelligent use of the ball, staying deep while his full-backs pushed up to attack wide. Went close with a powerful long-range effort in the second half.

  • Leon Osman

    Leon Osman

Powered forward brilliantly to nearly force a Jelavic goal in the 55th minute and calm in the pass throughout. Substituted for Anichebe with the game wrapped up.

  • Steven Pienaar

    Steven Pienaar

Energetic and industrious, the South African flitted from flank to flank, cutting inside or seeking space out wide. Seized his reward in style just before the hour with a purposeful run from deep on the right, cutting inside and belting a left-footed shot home. His through-ball assist for Mirallas was quite excellent and he deserved his applause on substitution for Hitzlsperger.

Every bit as keen and effective going forward from full-back as Baines on the opposite flank. The Irishman’s excellent drive and subsequent cross picked out Fellaini perfectly for his goal late in the first half.

  • Marouane Fellaini

    Marouane Fellaini

Dropped deep often in the first period to facilitate moves down the flanks but pushed ahead into the box for a trademark header to open the scoring. Involved in so much of the Toffees' play with calm authority.

  • Nikica Jelavic

Might have scored within 30 seconds if not for a very poor header, the Croatian was involved without having many opportunities to demonstrate his one-touch finishing ability. Combined well with his midfielders but could have been more ruthless when breaking past Mariappa in the first half and seeing Taylor save. Unluckier at the goalkeeper's fine close-range stop early in the second.

It is a pleasure to watch the Belgian find his feet at full fitness; his runs were quick and purposeful and the ball appeared somehow thinner when it fizzed off his boot. Forced a good save from Taylor with a long-ranger in the first half and got his deserved goal after a fine combination with Pienaar.

    Victor Anichebe

Brought on for Osman and had an effort cleared off the line late on just as he was starting to show his energy. All over the pitch as he looked to make an impact in a creditable show of commitment even with the result more or less assured.

Making his first Premier League appearance in nearly five years, the Reading debutant did himself no disservice with some fine stops, in particular from Mirallas and Jelavic. Largely blameless for the goals.

A resilient defensive performance in the first half, leading the back line and making his presence felt when going forward for set-pieces, but faded with his team in the second.

Caught out by a long ball in the first half, when he had Taylor to thank for stopping Jelavic, and increasingly tormented by Everton's attacking movement.

Wasted a good free kick early in the game and at times struggled to deal with Everton’s interchanging wingers. Bested on the Everton right for the cross that led to Fellaini’s opener and left for dead by Pienaar for the second goal. Cleared one off the line from Anichebe late on.

Finally given an overdue start and nearly opened the scoring when his shot rattled the crossbar at the end of a corner move. Should arguably have done better with it, though.
