  Gareth Bale Top of the Match

  Started in style by depositing a well-placed free kick after just five minutes, though the wall might have put up more of a fight. Did not turn that into another barnstormer but, even below 100 per cent, embarrassed the Newcastle defence for his second, sprinting between the centre-backs and scuffing his shot through Krul's legs. Nearly had a third but for the Dutchman's fine saves and a snatched attempt at the death.

  Spurs’ most threatening player in the first half, making his first start in the No.10 role. Curled a dangerous effort just over in the 20th minute after scuffing one earlier on but much quieter in the second period and replaced by Adebayor.
